do: MUSEU DOS BRINQUEDOS - MUNIQUE, ALEMANHA

Eu ainda hoje adoro brinquedos, ainda guardo comigo algumas bonecas (tenho uma boneca "mais velha" que eu de 1972) que gosto, ainda tenho três Pinypons que mesmo depois de mudar de casa várias vezes continuam a fazer parte da familia por isso ainda que pequeno, gostei muito do Museu dos Brinquedos. Também porque te dá outra perspectiva da história da cidade e dos que nela vivem, como brincavam as crianças e com o quê, o que estava na moda e em que época. Os brinquedos são um reflexo de como vivemos, evoluem connosco e por isso são uma maneira de entender o passado.

 

I still love toys, I still have some dolls (I have a doll "older" than me she is from 1972)that I like, I still have three Pinypons that even after moving house several times continue to be part of the family so even though it was small, I really enjoyed the Toy Museum. Also because it gives you another perspective of the history of the city and living there, how children played and with what, what was trendy and at what time. Toys are a reflection of how we live, they evolve with us and they are a way to understand the past.

Não seria fácil explicar porque é que num fim de semana curto em Amsterdão este foi o único museu que visitámos, creio que este post ajudará a esclarecê-lo. Podíamos falar de uma paixão pela marca e pela sua cerveja, mas nem é das nossas favoritas ainda assim era um museu que queríamos ver, do meu ponto de vista porque me interessa conhecer melhor uma das marcas mais reconhecidas a nível mundial e para o marido, é uma forma de escapar ao museu tradicional e entrar num tema que goste. E se houvesse ao lado um de carros seria a cereja no topo do bolo.

 

It wouldn't be easy to explain why in a short weekend in Amsterdam this was the only museum we visited. We could talk about a passion for the brand and for its beer, but for neither of us is our favorite still this was a museum we wanted to see, from my point of view because I am interested in knowing better one of the most recognized brands in the world and for my husband, is a way to escape the traditional museum and get a theme that he likes. And if there was next to it a car museum it would be the icing on the cake.

do:GALERIA UFFIZI - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Este era o museu que queria ver. Botticelli, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael e Verrocchio todos debaixo do mesmo tecto é de facto um privilégio. Tal era a ansiedade que tentámos entrar mais cedo como na Accademia mas a Uffizi exige que se respeite a hora da marcação.

Ainda bem que comprámos os bilhetes online porque as filas eram de desesperar mas vale muito a pena.

 

This was the museum that I wanted to see. Botticelli, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael and Verrocchio all under one roof is indeed a privilege. Such was the anxiety that we tried to get in early as we did in the Accademia but the Uffizi requires you to respect the appointment time.
Glad we bought the tickets online because the queues were desperate but well worth it.

do: GALERIA DELL'ACCADEMIA - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Depois de ler alguns guias sobre Florença, a primeira coisa que fiz foi marcar dois museus, o de Uffizi e este Dell'Accademia. Este último para poder contemplar a grandiosa obra de Michelangelo, David.

Como não sabíamos muito bem como funcionavam as reservas, se tínhamos que ir antes levantar os bilhetes se íamos á hora marcada resolvemos espreitar e tivémos sorte, tínhamos visita para as 14h e acabámos por entrar ás 12h. Vale a pena reservar porque entras á frente de todos os grupos de visita e todos os que não anteciparam a compra dos bilhetes.

 

After reading some guides about Florence, the first thing I did was book two museums in advance, the Uffizi and this Dell'Accademia. The latter was to be able to admire the great work of Michelangelo, David.
As we did not know very well how the reservation worked, if we had to go before to get the tickets if we were peering at the scheduled time and decided to take a look so we were lucky, we had to visit it at 14h and we were able to get in at 12h. It's worth booking ahead as you enter before all visiting groups and those who did not anticipate the purchase of tickets.

do: THYSSEN-BORNEMISZA - MADRID, ESPANHA

Duas curiosidades: a primeira é que este era o museu que nos faltava para completar o famoso triângulo da Arte, a segunda é que os anteriores visitei antes de viver em Madrid o que significa que tive três anos sem completar esse mesmo triângulo.

E se me perguntam de qual gostei mais não conseguiría responder, mas se só tens um dia em Madrid e tens que escolher um eu talvez deixasse este para último. O Prado tem pintores espanhóis dos séculos XVII e XVIII (como Goya e Velázquez) e o Reina Sofia tem mais modernos como Picasso (com o seu famoso "Guernica"), Dali e Miró.

 

Two curiosities: the first is that this was the museum that we needed to visit to complete the famous Art Triangle, the second is that the others I visited before living in Madrid which means that Ithree years without completing that same triangle.
And if you ask me which one I liked most I could not answer, but if you only have one day in Madrid and you have to choose one I might leave this one to last. The Prado has Spanish painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (as Goya and Velázquez) and the Reina Sofia has more modern as Picasso (with its famous "Guernica"), Dali and Miró.

Depois de ter explorado o exterior do Palacio decidimos entrar. Em algum lugar tinha lido que se pagava para entrar mas não nos cobraram nada.

O Museu Condes de Castro de Guimarães está dentro do género de museus que me agradam como o Museu Cerralbo por exemplo, casas-museus que expõem as peças de mobiliário e arte coleccionada por quem ali viveu.

 

After having explored the exterior of the Palace we decided to enter. Somewhere I had read that you paid to get in but they didn't charged anything.
The Museum Condes de Castro Guimarães is within the genre of museums that I like such as the Museo Cerralbo eg, house museums that exhibit the pieces of furniture and art by collected by who lived there. 

do: MUSEU CERRALBO - MADRID, ESPANHA

Este Museu é já um dos meus preferidos de Madrid, aqui não vamos encontrar o Guernica é certo nem os quadros de Velásquez mas sim a luxuosa casa do Marquês de Cerralbo e todos os objectos que fizeram parte da sua vida. O Palácio onde viviam foi construído no final do século XIX e está localizado no bairro de Arguelles muito próximo da Plaza de España.

A entrada custa 3€ e oferece uma viagem no tempo que nos permite imaginar como vivia esta familia onde o luxo, opulência e o gosto pela arte faz com que hoje este Museu seja um dos retratos mais fiéis daquela época. 

 

This Museum is now one of my favorites of Madrid, here we won't find the Guernica or the paintings of Velasquez but the luxurious home of the Marquis of Cerralbo and all objects that were part of his life. The palace where they lived was built in the late nineteenth century and is located in the Arguelles neighborhood very close to the Plaza de España.
Admission is 3€ and offers a trip back in time that allows us to imagine how this family used to live and where luxury, opulence and taste for art makes this museum one of the most faithful portraits of that time.

Desde que abriu ao público tinha muita curiosidade de visitar o Centro Centro principalmente porque está dentro do Palácio de Cibeles, o antigo Palácio das Comunicações e a sede do Ayuntamiento de Madrid.

Com este novo espaço Madrid amplia a sua oferta cultural na cidade e ainda para mais gratuita. É um espaço multiusos com uma zona que conta a história do Palácio, exposições de arte ou fotografia, espaços de lazer para miúdos e graúdos, zonas de trabalho, zonas de leitura e um fantástico mirador.

 

Since it open to the public I was curious to visit the Centro Centro specially because it inside the Cibeles Palace, former Comunications Palace and the headquarters of the City hall.

With this new space Madrid extendes it's cultural offer and for free. It is a multifunction place with an area that tells you the history of the Palace, art and photography exhibitions, leisure rooms for kids and grown ups, working and reading areas and also an amazing viewpoint.

Não é o Madame Tussaud e talvez nem queira ser, o seu preço é metade do que existe em Londres e algumas das suas figuras em cera têm uma boa qualidade, outras não tanto. Nele podemos encontrar grandes personagens da história espanhola desde reis e rainhas, passando por alguns episódios da sua história como a Conquista do Perú e do México, a escritores e pintores como Picasso e Cervantes sem esquecer as estrelas actuais como Rafa Nadal, a selecção de futebol espanhola ou David Bisbal por exemplo.

 

It's not Madame Tussaud's and maybe it doesn't want be, it is half the price of the one in Lndon and some of it's wax figures have good quality, others not so much.

Inside we can find great spanish historical figures like kings and queens, some episodes of their conquest over Perú and Mexico, also some writers and painters like Cervantes and Picasso without forgetting the current stars like Rafa Nadal, the spanish football team and David Bisbal for example.

Já tínhamos ido ver um jogo mas a verdade é que conhecemos muito pouco sobre a história do Real Madrid, apenas a mais recente que seguimos por apoiar os compatriotas que jogam nessa equipa.

Não visitei assim tantos estádios para dizer se este é melhor ou não, pela a sua história é um dos melhores do mundo e pela exposição que vimos interactiva e utilizando novas tecnologias parece-me que também neste capítulo o Real Madrid quer ser conhecido como um dos melhores clubes a "vender" a sua história. 

 

We had gone to see a game but the truth is we know very little about the history of Real Madrid, we only follow the most recent to support the portuguese in the team.

I haven't visited many stadiums to be able to say if this is better or not, by it's history is one of the best in the world and it's interactive exhibition using new technologies seems that is also something where Real Madrid wants to be known as one of best clubs to "sell" their story.

MUSEU DO BRINQUEDO - SINTRA, PORTUGAL

Nota: O museu encerrou no Verão de 2014 - The museum closed it's doors in the Summer of 2014

Quando fui dar um passeio por Sintra decidi visitar também o Museu do Brinquedo, já não foi a primeira vez mas é sempre bom rever uma das maiores coleções de brinquedos da Europa. João Arbués Moreira foi o homem que recolheu durante toda a sua vida vários brinquedos e no final da década de 80 a sua Fundação recebe todo o seu legado. Legado que hoje podemos visitar em Sintra e que é um paraíso para os amantes (como eu) dos brinquedos antigos.

When went for a walk in Sintra I decided to also visit the Toy Museum, it was not the first time but it is always good to see one of the greatest collections of European toys. João Arbués Moreira was the man who collected throughout his life several toys and at the end of the 80s his Foundation receives all his legacy. Legacy that today we can see in Sintra, which is a paradise for lovers (like me) of old toys.

do: MUSEU PALATINO - ROMA, ITÁLIA

A sua entrada está incluída na visita ao Monte Palatino (que no nosso caso foi feita com o Roma Pass) e reúne vários artefactos que foram encontrados neste local, alguns serão originais mas grande parte pelo o que vimos pelas placas diziam que eram cópias. Ainda assim reúne uma impressionante colecção de bustos e esculturas, além de restos de mosaicos que decoravam as casas dos que aqui viviam.

Your admission is included in visit to Monte Palatino (which in our case was made with the Roma Pass) and it gathers several artifacts that were found at this site, some will be original but much of what we saw by it's signs said they were copies. Still it brings together an impressive collection of busts and sculptures, along with remains of mosaics that decorated the homes of those who lived here.

do: MUSEU GUGGENHEIM - BILBAO, ESPANHA

Quase parece uma injustiça resumir Bilbao ao Guggenheim, a sua "atracção" número um, lembro-me que falava com os meus colegas espanhóis e sempre diziam que a cidade não era bonita á excepção do museu desenhado pelo famoso Frank Gehry. Felizmente, a sua construção e inauguração em 1997 veio trazer um outro dinamismo a uma cidade portuária e indústrial, um patinho feio que se transformou numa cidade referência em Espanha.

It almost seems unfair to summarize Bilbao Guggenheim, it's number one "attraction", I remember talking to my Spanish colleagues and they always said that the city was not pretty exception to the museum designed by the famous Frank Gehry. Fortunately, its construction and opening in 1997 has brought a different dynamic to a port and industrial city, an ugly duckling that became a reference city in Spain.

No nosso passeio por Bilbao visitámos o Alhondiga, o centro cultural da cidade. Instalado num antigo armazém de vinho construído em 1909, deixou de funcionar nos anos 70 e ficou entregue ao abandono. Felizmente a cidade de Bilbao conseguiu recuperá-lo para utilização pública e para a promoção de eventos culturais.

On our stroll in Bilbao we visited the Alhondiga, the city's cultural center. Housed in a former wine warehouse built in 1909, it stopped working in the 70s and was left abandoned. Fortunately the city of Bilbao managed to retrieve it for public use and for the promotion of cultural events.

Estive em Dublin a trabalho, não foi possível conhecer muito da cidade mas uma das coisas que tivémos oportunidade de fazer foi visitar a Guiness Storehouse no edificio de St. James Gate onde no século XVIII, Arthur Guiness produz a famosa cerveja com o mesmo nome.

 

I was in Dublin to work, it was not possible to visit much the city but one of things that we had opportunity to visit was the Guinness Storehouse in St. James Gate building where in the eighteenth century, Arthur Guinness produces the famous beer of the same name.

do: MUSEU NACIONAL DE CIÊNCIAS NATURAIS, MADRID, ESPANHA

Num fim de semana onde a chuva ameaçava cair (a que tantos pedem neste inverno) estava fora de questão passar mais um dia em casa. Uma boa solução para quem tem crianças é sem dúvida levá-los ao Museu Nacional de Ciências Naturais junto ao Paseo da Castellana.

 

In a weekend where rain threatened to fall (that many are asking for this winter)it was out of the question to spend another day at home. A good solution for those with children is undoubtedly take them to the National Museum of Natural Sciences, next to Paseo de la Castellana.

do: CENTRO GEORGES POMPIDOU - PARIS, FRANÇA

Inaugurado em 1977, este centro nacional de arte e cultura é já um marco de Paris. Com a sua arrojada arquitectura, animação nas praças e ruas circundantes, é díficil ficar indiferente, no nosso guia podia ler-se que é como se fosse um edificio virado do avesso, onde as tubagens e condutas funcionam também como elementos decorativos.

 

Opened in 1977, this national center of art and culture is already a landmark of Paris. With its bold architecture, animation and plazas surrounding streets, it's hard to remain indifferent, in our guide we could read that it's like a building turned inside out where pipes and conduits also function as decorative elements.

Hoje visitámos o Museu Reina Sofia em Madrid.

Localizado numa praça perto da Atocha, este museu contém alguma das obras mais importantes de artistas espanhóis muito conhecidos como Picasso, Dalí e Miró.

O preço para entrar são 6€ mas aos Domingos por exemplo é gratuito tendo um horário mais reduzido fechando ás 19h. Faz parte de um conhecido triângulo de museus que inclui o Prado e o Thyssen, todos junto ao Paseo del Prado.

Um elevador leva-nos até ao piso onde estão várias salas com a sua vasta colecção de quadros, dele conseguimos ver a fachada da estação da Atocha.

 

Today we visited the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Located in a plaza near the Atocha, this museum contains some of the most important works of Spanish famous painters as Picasso, Dalí and Miró.
The admission fee is 6€  and on Sundays it's free for example having a shorter time until 19h. It is part of a famous museum triangle that includes Prado and the Thyssen, all of them near the Paseo del Prado.
An elevator takes us to the floor where several rooms have a vast collection of paintings, from it we could see the front of the Atocha station.

do: EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT - SEATTLE, EUA

Como fomos visitar uns primos, levaram-nos de carro até ao centro. Estacionámos junto ao Monorail de Seattle e de aqui já temos a noção de como é uma grande cidade norte-americana. Arranha-céus por todo o lado, muita gente na rua apesar do frio e da chuva e neste caso, porque fomos no Natal, as decorações natalicias.

Apanhámos então o monorail de Seattle, uma óptima experiência para ver um pouco da cidade principalmente em dias chuvosos como o de hoje. O nosso destino era o Experience Music Project que fica muito próximo da famosa e icónica Space Needle.

Ir a Madrid vezes sem conta e não conhecer este museu é no mínimo uma contra-ordenação grave. É essencial para conhecer a história do país e como a arte o influenciou e documentou.

Os fans de Diego Velázquez encontram aqui as suas obras mais importantes entre elas o famoso quadro "Las Meninas". Podemos tirar fotos dentro do museu (felizmente!!) mas sem flash (regra que devemos respeitar).

 

Going to Madrid over and over again and not know this museum is at least a serious offense. It is essential to know the history of the country and how art has influenced and documented it.
The fans of Diego Velázquez find their most important works including the famous painting "Las Meninas." We can take pictures inside the museum (thankfully!!) But without flash (we must respect rule).
