do: PALÁCIO CONDES DE CASTRO GUIMARÃES - CASCAIS, PORTUGAL

Este lugar marcou para sempre a minha infância, se houvesse alguma história de princesas era este o palácio que eu imaginava, era no topo de uma das suas janelas que a Julieta suspirava pelo Romeo. Era de conto de fadas.

Tive a sorte de o visitar várias vezes e numa das minhas últimas idas a Portugal voltei a fazê-lo. Construído no século XIX, está aberto ao público como museu onde podemos ver peças que pertenciam aos Condes para além de uma exposição sobre a pré-história em Cascais. Dividi o post em dois, o primeiro será sobre o Palácio e o segundo sobre o Museu.

 

This place has forever marked my childhood, if there was any princess story this was the palace I imagined, it was at the top of one of his windows that Juliet sighed for Romeo. It was a fairy tale.
I was fortunate to visit it several times and in one of my last trips to Portugal I did it again. Built in the nineteenth century, it is open to the public as a museum where you can see pieces that belonged to the Counts in addition to an exhibit of the prehistory era in Cascais. I split the post into two, the first will be on the Palace and the second about the Museum.

sleep: VIVA MARINHA HOTEL, CASCAIS, PORTUGAL

Apesar de o colocar numa categoria de "sleep" a verdade é que nunca dormimos neste hotel e é a terceira vez que o visitamos. A primeira vez foi para uma reunião de equipa, a segunda para uma convenção da empresa onde me despedi de todos e parti para Madrid e a última foi no inicio deste mês em que decidi "alugar" um apartamento por um dia para fazer uma festa de aniversario. Foi uma excelente escolha e todos os que foram á festa adoraram a ideia.

 

Although placed in a category of "sleep" the truth is that we never slept in this hotel and it is the third time we visited. The first time was for a team meeting, the second with our company to a convention where I said goodbye to everyone and left for Madrid and the last was at the beginning of this month when I decided to "rent" an apartment for a day to make a birthday party . It was an excellent choice and all who have been to the party loved the idea.

eat: OSTERIA - LISBOA, PORTUGAL

Os italianos têm o "ristorante", a "trattoria" e a "osteria", o que os define é o tipo de comida que servem e se o ambiente é mais ou menos formal. Uma "osteria" está no fim da linha, serve comida simples, em pequenas porções e a preços muito baratos é como a Timeout explica: uma tasca italiana. E quando entras na Osteria tens essa sensação de entra numa tasca mas eu até nem diría que seria uma italiana, até me pareceu bem portuguesa não fossem as molduras de publicidade e a sua carta de petiscos italianos.

 

The Italians have the "ristorante", the "trattoria" and "osteria", what defines them is the type of food they serve and if the environment is more or less formal. A "osteria" is at the end of the line, it serves simple food in small portions and the price is very cheap as the Timeout explains: an Italian tavern. And when you enter the Osteria you have that feeling of entering a tavern but I would not even say an Italian, Portuguese seemed good to me were not the frames of advertising and its letter of Italian food.

Temos que admitir que não fomos os melhores "peregrinos" em Santiago de Compostela. É quase obrigatório entrar na Catedral pela Praça de Obradoiro e nós não o fizémos, aliás só vimos esta famosa Praça justamente da escadaria da porta principal do local de culto ao apóstolo Santiago. E é de facto a melhor forma de a conhecer, daquele ponto mais alto podemos ver o Palacio de Raxoi, o Colégio de S. Jerónimo e o Hostal dos Reyes Católicos.

 

We must admit that we were not the best "pilgrims" in Santiago de Compostela. It is almost mandatory to enter the Cathedral through the Plaza de Obradoiro and we did not, in fact we just saw this famous Square from the steps of the front door of the place of worship of the Apostle Santiago. And it is indeed the best way to discover it, from that highest point we can see the Palacio de Raxoi, the College of St. Jerome and the Hostal Reyes of Catholics.

Devo admitir que marquei este hotel em Santiago de Compostela como quem faz uma compra por impulso. Pesquisei no booking.com vários preços e a única condição que tinha era que ficasse no centro histórico, quando me apareceu o Casas Reais e vi fotos dos quartos marquei logo mesmo sabendo que não era a opção mais barata.

 

I must admit that I booked this hotel in Santiago de Compostela as who makes an impulse purchase. Researched various prices on booking.com and the only condition was that we had to stay in the historic center, when saw the Casas Reais (Royal Houses) bedroom potos I dediced to book it even though it was not the cheapest option.

eat: O DEZASEIS - SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, ESPANHA

 

Levava uma lista de restaurantes onde comer em Santiago de Compostela, este era um deles vinha até no guia do Lonely Planet e depois da recomendação da senhora do hotel onde ficámos não podíamos deixar de o conhecer. Problema: estava escandalosamente cheio! Tal era a coisa que tínhamos que esperar uma hora. "Não faz mal", dissémos. Vamos só ali á Catedral e já voltamos. Se estava assim de cheio talvez merecesse a espera...

 

I carried a list of restaurants where to eat in Santiago de Compostela, this was one of them that came up in the Lonely Planet guide and after the recommendation of the lady from the hotel where we were staying we had to know it. Problem: it was outrageously full! Such was the thing we had to wait an hour. "It's OK," we said. We will just visit the Cathedral. If it was so full that it perhaps deserved the wait ...

Dou voltas e voltas a pensar qual o grande encanto de Santiago de Compostela para os que não compartem a fé Cristã. Voltas e voltas a pensar qual é o real interesse da Catedral de Santiago que faz pessoas percorrerem quilómetros e quilómetros a pé para aqui chegarem. Para os que têm fé, para os que acreditam que ali estão na presença de um Apóstolo que comeu ao lado de Jesús Cristos faz todo o sentido e não haverá tantos lugares como este no mundo, mas e os outros?

Eu diría que o mesmo, sejas ou não cristão é impossível ficar indiferente á Catedral e á história que conta, impossível não ter vontade de entrar mesmo arriscando a perder mesa no restaurante que reservámos e nem é das mais bonitas que vimos, mas há todo um respeito e dedicação á sua volta que faz sentir o mesmo.

 

I go round and round thinking what is the great charm of Santiago de Compostela for those who do not share the Christian faith. Round and round thinking what is the real interest of the Cathedral of Santiago that makes people roam miles and miles on foot to reach here. For those who have faith, to those who believe that they are in the presence of an Apostle who ate beside Jesus Christ it makes total sense and there won't be many places like this in the world, but what about the others?
I would say the same, wether you are Christian or not it's impossible to remain indifferent to the Cathedral and to the story it tells, impossible not to want to get in even risking losing the table  we booked at the restaurant and it's not even the nicest we've seen, but there is a whole respect and dedication around it that makes you feel the same.
