do: DUOMO - PISA, ITÁLIA

O Duomo foi o primeiro monumento que visitámos dos três que podíamos ver em Pisa. Foi construído em duas fases, a primeira no século XI com ajuda do dinheiro que os seus habitantes acumularam dos saques que fizeram a Palermo. No século XII termina a sua construção mas no século XVI após um incêndio tiveram que reconstrui-la. Ainda assim e depois de ter sobrevivido ao tempo e ás guerras, podemos visitar gratuitamente uma Catedral que muitos colocam para segundo plano ao visitar Pisa mas que nós gostámos muito de conhecer.

The Duomo was the first monument we visited out of the three that we could see in Pisa. It was built in two phases, the first in the eleventh century with the help of the money that the inhabitants accumulated from the loots made in Palermo. In the twelfth century ends its construction but in the sixteenth century after a fire it had to be rebuilt. Still and having survived the time and wars, we can visit for free a Cathedral that many put into the background when visiting Pisa but we very much enjoyed the experience.

eat: OSTERIA LA MESCITA - PISA, ITÁLIA

O La Mescita foi um acidente, daqueles que acontece e acabas satisfeito por que achas que descobriste um lugar secreto. Depois vês o autocolante do Tripadvisor, não foste o único. Procurávamos outro restaurante quando encontrámos uma pequena praça onde se desmontava um mercado, ainda resistiam algumas bancadas e em frente estava esta Osteria.

Espreitámos e não estava muito cheia, ficámos ali a olhar para a ementa uns bons minutos até que algo nos fez entrar, nem sei bem o quê e seguramente que não foi o amontoado de autocolantes que recomendam o restaurante.

La Mescita was an accident, of those that happens and you end up glad because you think you got a secret place. Then you see the sticker on Tripadvisor, you were not the only one. We were looking for another restaurant when we found a small square with a market being dismantled, still there were some benches and in front was this Osteria.
We peeked and it was not very crowded, we stood there looking at the menu a few minutes until something made ​​us come in, I do not even know what, and it certainly was not the pile of stickers that recommend the restaurant.

do: CAMPO DEI MIRACOLI - PISA, ITÁLIA

Florença foi o ponto central da nossa viagem mas não o único, de lá apanhámos o comboio para Siena e noutro dia (em que tivémos azar com o tempo porque choveu bastante) fomos a Pisa. O principal objectivo era ver este Campo dei Miracoli famoso pela sua Torre inclinada mas que acaba por impressionar mais quando juntamos o Batistério e o Duomo. É realmente incrível como este conjunto arquitectónico vive aqui desde os século XI e XII.

Florence was the central point of our trip but not the only one, from there we took the train to Siena and another day (we had bad luck with the weather because it rained a lot) went to Pisa. The main objective was to see this Campo dei Miracoli famous for its Leaning Tower but ultimately it impresses you more when you see it together with the Duomo and Baptistery. It is truly amazing how this architectural ensemble lives here since the XI and XII century.

eat: TAVERNA DE SAN GIUSEPPE - SIENA, ITÁLIA

Levava comigo uma pequena lista dos restaurantes recomendados de Siena e San Giuseppe estava em primeiro lugar. Ao principio custou-nos um pouco a encontrá-lo mas não tínhamos pressa, fomos conhecendo as ruas do centro histórico de Siena quando chegámos á porta desta osteria, queríamos entender que tal era o restaurante mais recomendado da cidade no TripAdvisor.

I took with me a short list of recommended restaurants in Siena and San Giuseppe was the first. I was a Little hard to find it but we did weren't in a hurry, we got to discover the streets of the historic center of Siena when we reached the door of this osteria, we wanted to understand why this was the most recommended restaurant City on TripAdvisor.

do: ALFIERI - SIENA, ITÁLIA

Estávamos á procura do melhor sitio na praça para nos sentarmos (no chão) quando do Palazzo Pubblico começam a sair os "alfieri" (porta bandeiras) acompanhados por outros que tocavam tambores. Assim do nada, sem avisar.  Cada grupo representava uma Contrada (bairro) exibindo orgulhosamente os seus símbolos ou brasões caminhando pela praça até que os deixámos de ver. Ao principio achei que seria uma mudança da guarda mas nunca mais vinha os substitutos.

We were searching for the best place to sit in the square (on the ground) when from the Palazzo Pubblico begin to leave the "alfieri" (port flags) came out accompanied by others who played drums. Just like that, without warning. Each group represented a Contrada (ward) proudly displaying their symbols or coats walking through the square until we no longer see. At first I thought it would be a changing of the guard but the substitutes never came.

do: PIAZZA DEI CAMPO - SIENA, ITÁLIA

Para além do Palio, as famosas corridas de cavalo á volta desta praça, o maior divertimento desta praça é mesmo sentar no chão e apanhar sol. Ao principio custa a entender o conceito, não há relva, nem areia, nem rio, nem praia e todos se sentam no chão, alguns vão comendo qualquer coisa como se fosse um parque e não uma praça. Mas uma vez nela sentes necessidade de fazer o mesmo, tenho uma teoría de que não são sentam pelo sol mas para absorver a beleza desta praça medieval.

 

Besides the Palio, the famous horse races around this square, the most fun thing to do in this square is to sit on the floor and do some sunbathing. At first it takes time to understand the concept, there is no grass or sand, or river, or beach and they all sit on the floor, some will eat something like it's a park and not a square. But once in it you feel the need to do the same, I have a theory that they are not sitting for the sun but to absorb the beauty of this medieval square.

Dentro da grande rivalidade que sempre existiu entre Florença e Siena para mim há uma coisa garantida, o melhor Duomo é o de Siena. Nem sei se são comparáveis, o da primeira cidade é um esplendor por fora e quase uma decepção por dentro (eu sei que embirrei com o Duomo de Florença) mas este pode não impressionar tanto por fora mas não deixa de interessante e quando entras a admiração é tal que acho que aquí sim apanhei o Síndrome de Stendhal. (Atenção este post é longo)

Within the great rivalry that has always existed between Florence and Siena for me there is one thing guaranteed, the best Duomo is the one of Siena. I do not know if they are comparable, the first is all about a splendorous outside and almost a disappointment inside (I know I have been picking on Florence's Duomo) but this may not impress much on the outside but it is nonetheless interesting and when you enter the admiration is such that here  I think I caught the Stendhal Syndrome.
