do: HOTEL DE BOURGTHEROULDE - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Hoje é um hotel de luxo mas o Bourgtheroulde chegou a ser um banco e originalmente uma Palácio para a familia Le Roux. É uma fascinante obra do Renascimento que foi sendo construída ao longo do tempo e que sofreu também durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Apenas visitámos o pátio que será o que tem acesso público o interior está reservado a hóspedes do hotel.

Today it's a luxury hotel but the Bourgtheroulde was actually a bank and originally a palace for the family Le Roux. It's a fascinating Renaissance work that was built over time and also suffered during the Second World War. We just visited the courtyard which has access to the public but the interior is reserved for hotel guests.

eat: AUZOU - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Adoro macarons, admito. Sou especialista em comer este maravilhoso doce mas estou longe de ser especialista em avaliá-los, ainda assim do pouco que sei posso dizer que os da Grand-Mére Auzou foram dos melhores que já comi e provei os da Ladurée. É impossível passar pela Rue du Gros Horloge e não parar junto ao carrinho da loja onde está a sua colorida pirâmide de macarons.

 

I love macarons, I admit it. I'm specialized in eating this wonderful sweet but I'm far from being an expert to evaluate them, yet from the little I know I can say that the Grand-Mère Auzou were the best I've ever eaten and I tasted the ones from Ladurée. It is impossible to pass through the Rue du Gros Horloge and not stop along the store's cart where it's colorful pyramid of macarons is.

Começámos a entrar no espírito de Rouen quando entrámos na Rue du Gros Horloge, até então só tínhamos visto a Catedral e a sua Praça mas foi quando chegamos até aqui que realmente entendemos porque é que vale a pena visitar esta cidade que apesar dos bombardeios da Segunda Guerra Mundial consegue manter uma parte da sua arquitetura medieval. O nome vem do Gros Horloge que está a meio de esta rua que liga a Catedral até á Place du Vieux Marché.

 

We started to get into the spirit of Rouen when we entered the Rue du Gros Horloge, until then we had only seen the Cathedral and its square but it was when we got here we really understand why it is worth visiting this city that despite the bombings of World War it manages to keep a portion of its medieval architecture. The name comes from the Gros Horloge which is in the middle of this street that connects the Cathedral until the Place du Vieux Marché.

do: CATEDRAL NOTRE-DAME - ROUEN, FRANÇA

O primeiro que visitámos em Rouen foi a sua catedral, chegámos antes de fechar e não conseguimos ver tudo mas ainda assim foi uma excelente experiência. A sua construção iniciou no século XII no local de uma basílica do século IV e outra igreja de estilo románico de XI e conserva o seu imponente estilo gótico mesmo depois de ter vivido reformas após varias guerras, furacões, raios, etc..

 

The first thing we visited in Rouen was its cathedral, we arrived before closing and we could not see everything but it was still a great experience. Its construction began in the twelfth century on the site of a basilica of the fourth century and another church of Romanesque style from the XI century and still retains its imposing Gothic style even after having lived through reforms after several wars, hurricanes, lightning, etc..

eat: DAME CAKES - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Queria tanto ir ao Dame Cakes que demos algumas voltas por Rouen para fazer tempo até abrir (não abre muito cedo na manhã) e ainda bem que não desistimos. É um daqueles sitios que te faz viajar no tempo, pensar que estás no inicio do século XX onde o tempo parecia andar mais devagar e alguns privilegiados podiam sentar-se num Salão de Chá como o Dame Cakes, tomar uma bebida quente e provar um dos seus deliciosos bolos. Só a montra já te convida a entrar.

 

I wanted to go to Dame Cakes so much that we went for a few laps around Rouen to make time so it would open (it does not open very early in the morning) and I'm glad we did not give up. It's one of those places that makes you travel back in time, thinking you're in the early twentieth century where time seems to move slowly and a privileged few can sit in a Tea Room like the Dame Cakes, have a hot drink and sample one of their delicious cakes. Just the window already invites you to go in.

sleep: IBIS CHAMP DE MARS - ROUEN, FRANÇA

O hotel onde ficámos foi o Ibis Champ de Mars, fica relativamente perto do centro de Rouen ainda que ao ver o mapa tivéssemos ficado com a sensação de que iria ser mais longe. Dormimos apenas uma noite, foi uma segunda-feira e o preço foi de 59€ pelo quarto, foi do mais barato que conseguimos encontrar na cidade (e com condições razoáveis).

 

The hotel where we stayed was the Hotel Champ de Mars it is relatively close to the center of Rouen yet when we saw it on the map it left us with the feeling that it would be further away. We slept only one night, it was a Monday and the price was 59 € for the room, it was the cheapest we could find in the city (with reasonable conditions).

do: IGREJA DE STA. JOANA - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Tenho que confessar que sou uma fã da história da Joana D'Arc, que vi alguns filmes e séries sobre a sua vida e visitei outras cidades francesas (como Orleães) onde estive mais perto de saber mais sobre ela. A igreja que lhe dedicou a cidade de Rouen foi construída junto ao local onde foi executada mas o edificio tem uma arquitetura interessante que a mim me custou ligar á sua vida talvez por sentir que por exemplo a Catedral de Sainte-Croix em Orleães tivesse mais que ver com a sua época.

 

I have to confess that I am a fan of the story of Joan of Arc, I saw movies and series about her life and visited other French cities (like Orleans) which was closer to know more about her. The church that the city of Rouen dedicated  was built near the place where she was executed but the building has an interesting architecture that was hard for me to connect to her life maybe because I felt that example the Cathedral of Sainte-Croix in Orleans had more to do with her era.
