Dos vários monumentos que tem esta cidade, o Washington Monument é um dos mais emblemáticos começou a ser construído em 1848 para prestar tributo ao primeiro presidente dos Estados Unidos, George Washington. Tem a forma de um obelisco e com cento e setenta metros de altura é o edificio mais alto da cidade.

 

Of the several landmarks that this city has, the Washington Monument is one of the most emblematic, it's construction began in 1848 to pay tribute to the first US president, George Washington. It has the shape of an obelisk and at hundred and seventy meters is the tallest building in the city.

Um dos monumentos mais recentes do National Mall está dedicado a todos os homens e mulheres que serviram o seu país durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.  Mais de quatrocentos mil americanos perderam a vida numa das guerras mais sangrentas da história da humanidade e este monumento de forma oval inaugurado em 2004 procura homenageá-los assim como os que não tendo lutado na Europa ou em Pearl Harbor contribuiram desde o seu país para o esforço de guerra.

 

One of the most recent monuments of the National Mall is dedicated to all the men and women who served their country during World War II. More than four hundred thousand Americans lost their lives in one of the blodiest wars in human history and this oval monument that opened in 2004 seeks to honor them as well as those having not fought in Europe or Pearl Harbor contributed from their country to the war effort.

do: ULYSSES S. GRANT MEMORIAL - WASHINGTON DC, EUA

Junto ao espelho de água do Capitólio está um monumento dedicado a Ulysses S. Grant, o General que durante a Guerra Civil Americana (século XIX) liderou as tropas da União conseguindo a vitória sobre a Confederação. Foi depois Presidente dos Estados Unidos a seguir a Andrew Johnson que sucedeu a Lincoln após o seu assassinato. O monumento têm uma estátua sua a cavalo dando mais relevância ao seu papel como militar que como político.

 

Next to the Capitol water mirror is a monument dedicated to Ulysses S. Grant, the General during the American Civil War (XIX century) who led the Union troops achieving victory over the Confederacy. He was after the US President following the Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln after his assassination. The monument has a statue of him riding a horse giving more relevance to his role as military that as a politician.

O nosso primeiro contacto com a cidade de Washington foi este, a Union Station. E não porque chegámos de comboio mas como funciona também como terminal de autocarros tivémos a oportunidade de passar por ela. Foi construída no inicio do século XX e  restaurada nos anos oitenta mantendo uma boa parte da sua estrutura original.

 

Our first contact with the city of Washington was this, the Union Station. And not because we arrived by train but it also functions as bus station so we had the opportunity to go through it. It was built in the early twentieth century and restored in the eighties keeping much of the original structure.

do: BIBLIOTECA DE CONGRESSO - WASHINGTON DC, EUA

Um túnel liga o Capitólio ao edificio principal da Biblioteca de Congresso que tem o nome de Thomas Jefferson que ofereceu a sua colecção pessoal para compensar a destruição da anterior. Foi construído no final do século XIX com um excelente nível de detalhe e uma interessante arquitectura que me fez desejar ser livro e viver ali.

A tunnel connects the Capitol to the main building of the Library of Congress that has the name of Thomas Jefferson whi offered his personal collection to compensate for the destruction of the previous one. It was built in the late nineteenth century with an excellent level of detail and interesting architecture that made me want to be book and live there.

do: MEMORIAL DOS VETERANOS DA GUERRA DA COREIA - WASHINGTON DC, EUA

O National Mall de Washington DC deve ser o lugar com mais memorais por metro quadrado e um dos que mais gostei foi este, o dos Veteranos da Guerra da Coreia. Durou cerca de três anos, com a Coreia dividida entre o Norte e o Sul, este último contou com o apoio dos Estados Unidos e o Reino Unido. Mais de trinta e cinco mil soldados americanos perderam a vida nesta Guerra e este monumento procura prestar-lhes uma homenagem.

 

The National Mall of Washington DC must be the place with more memorials per square meter and one that I liked the most, the Korean War Veterans. It lasted about three years, with Korea divided between the North and the South, the latter had the support of the United States and the United Kingdom. More than thirty-five thousand American soldiers lost their lives in this war and this monument seeks to provide them a tribute.

Num dos extremos do National Mall, oposto ao Lincoln Memorial está o Capitólio, o edificio mais importante da cidade de Washington D.C. e o lugar onde reúne o Congresso que decide o futuro dos Estados Unidos. Pensámos não ter tempo para o visitar e andámos ás voltas á procura da entrada até que finalmente conseguimos vê-lo por dentro numa visita guiada (são todas) e sem pagar nada. Sim...é grátis.

 

At one end of the National Mall, opposite the Lincoln Memorial is the Capitol, the most important building in the city of Washington DC and the place where Congress meets to decide the future of the United States. We thought we would not have time to visit and we went round and round trying to find the entrance until we finally got to see it inside in a guided tour (all are) and without paying anything. Yes ... it's free.
