HERMAN ZE GERMAN - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Comer a um bom preço em Londres não é fácil e o melhor é nem converter as libras em euros porque a situação fica ainda pior, mas o Herman Ze German foi uma das refeições mais económicas que tivemos durante a nossa estadia e poderia ter sido ainda mais barata não fosse ter pedido demasiada comida. Têm mais restaurantes mas o que fomos está na zona de Charing Cross ao lado da estação, numa rua estreita quase escondida para provar os seus bratwurst.

MADAME TUSSAUDS - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Confissão: adoro ir ao Madame Tussauds. Volto a ser criança, a saltar de alegria por ver o Tom Hanks de perto ou esperar na fila ansiosa por tirar uma fotografia com o E.T.. A primeira vez que fui ao de Londres teria uns quinze anos e adorei tocar em estrelas que admirava nos ecrãs sem os conhecer de carne e osso, na realidade aqui também não mas entras nesse mundo da ilusão em que podes tirar uma selfie com a Mockingjay.

Confession: I love going to Madame Tussauds. Back to being a child, jumping with joy seeing Tom Hanks so close or wait in a queue eager to take a picture with the ET. The first time I went to the one in London I was fifteen and loved touching stars I admired the screens without knowing them in the flesh, in reality here you don't either but you enter this world of illusion in which you can take a selfie with the Mockingjay.

PATTY & BUN - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Tinha visto recomendações na TimeOut sobre o Patty&Bun, falam de um dos melhores hamburguers da cidade de Londres e sentimos a obrigação de os provar. Fomos ao que está na James Street e estava cheio, gente fora á espera alguns já com um ar desesperado como no nosso caso estamos a falar de uma mesa para dois conseguimos rapidamente entrar na sua pequena sala com pouco mais de trinta lugares sentados. E quando provas os hamburguers entendes porque é que há fila fora...valem mesmo a pena.

I had seen recommendations on TimeOut about Patty & Bun, they spoke about one of the best burgers in the city of London and we felt obliged to taste them. We went to the one on James Street and was full, there were people outside waiting witha desperate look in their faces but as in our case we are talking about a table for two we could quickly enter their small room with just over thirty seats. And when you taste the hamburgers you understand why there is queue outside ... it's quite worth it.

GEORGIANS GARDEN - BATH, INGLATERRA

Tenho uma imensa curiosidade em conhecer uma casa de Bath por dentro, em especial as do The Circus ou do Royal Crescent. Enquanto caminhávamos pela Royal Avenue justamente nas traseiras das casas de The Circus, uma seta indicava a direção de um jardim da época Georgiana, não era um interior de uma casa mas já era algo. Parecia uma daquelas grandes descobertas, um lugar secreto que não estava a ser explorado por mais ninguém, era o jardim do Nº4 que foi remodelado em 1985.

I have an immense curiosity to know a Bath house on the inside, especially at The Circus and the Royal Crescent. As we walked by the Royal Avenue just to the rear of the house of The Circus, an arrow indicating the direction of a garden of the Georgian era, it was not the inside of a house but it was a start. Looked like one of those great discoveries, a secret place that was not being exploited by anyone else, it was the garden of # 4 that was refurbished in 1985.

THE CIRCUS - BATH, INGLATERRA

Antes de chegar ao Royal Crescent passamos pelo The Circus, o nome leva a pensar num circo mas temos que ir ás sua origem latina para saber que é um círculo porque é a forma que tem esta zona de casas construída no século XVIII. São três as ruas que rompem The Circus em três, uma é Gay Street que foi a que subimos para lá chegar, a outra é a Brock Street que nos leva até ao Royal Crescent e por último, está  a Bennett street que dá acesso ao Museu da Moda.

Before arriving at Royal Crescent we passed by The Circus, the name makes you think of a circus (entertainment) but we have to go to its Latin origin to know that is a circle because it is the way that this housing area was built in the eighteenth century. There are three streets that break The Circus into three, one is Gay Street that was the one that we went up to get there, the other is the Brock Street which leads us to the Royal Crescent and last is Bennett street that leads to the fashion museum .

PONTE DE PULTENEY - BATH, INGLATERRA

A versão inglesa da Ponte Vecchio de Florença acrescenta charme a Bath, construída no século XVIII sobre o rio Avon tem tal como a sua "prima" italiana algumas lojas e um pequeno café com vista para o rio. Parece que não há nada mais romântico que sentar nesse estreito café numa mesinha colada ao rio e a tomar o chá das cinco bem acompanhados por uns scones com doce e manteiga.

The English version of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence adds charm to Bath, built in the eighteenth century on the Avon River has as its "cousin" Italian a few shops and a small cafe overlooking the river. It seems that there is nothing more romantic than sitting in that narrow place in a coffee table glued to the river and to take afternoon tea accompanied by some scones with jam and butter.

QUEEN'S SQUARE - BATH, INGLATERRA

Bath é Património Mundial da Humanidade como um todo, não é só pelo Circus, pelo Royal Crescent ou pelas Termas Romanas mas toda a cidade. A juntar á lista está esta praça, Queen's Square, discreta mas com vários detalhes com história e se não fosse pelos carros passam por ali perto ou pelas pessoas com calças de ganga seria uma foto perfeita e intacta de uma época dourada entre o século XVII e XVIII.

Bath is a World Heritage site as a whole, is not only the Circus, the Royal Crescent or the Roman Baths but the whole city. Adding to the list is this square, Queen's Square, discreet but with several details with history and if it wasn't for the cars passing by or by people with blue jeans it would be a perfect and intact picture of a Golden Age of the seventeenth century, XVIII.

MUSEU DA MODA - BATH, INGLATERRA

Quando comprámos o bilhete combinado tinha claro que queria visitar este museu, sempre associei Bath a Jane Austen, á moda do principio do século XIX e aqui poderia estar mais perto de alguns de esses modelos que tiveram tanto êxito na época além de oferecer uma oportunidade única de experimentar um vestido e viajar no tempo. São várias galerias com mais de cento e cinquenta roupas expostas desde o século XVII até aos dias de hoje.

When we bought the combined ticket I had it clear that wanted to visit this museum, I always associated Bath to Jane Austen, to the fashion the beginning of the nineteenth century and here I could be closer to some of these models that were so successful at the time in addition to offering a unique opportunity to try a dress and travel back in time. There are several galleries with over one hundred and fifty clothes displayed from the seventeenth century to the present day.

FUDGE FACTORY - BATH, INGLATERRA

Conhecemos a Fudge Factory no ano em que completou 20 anos de idade, a loja fundada por Maureen Lechmere teve a sua origem muito antes no Pier 39 em São Francisco e quando se muda para Bath trouxe o seu pequeno negócio e ainda bem, são menos milhas as que tenho que percorrer para poder comer o seu Salted Caramel.  Só nos arrependemos de uma coisa, ter ido ao fecho porque perdemos o momento em que fazem o fudge.

We know the Fudge Factory in the year they turned 20 years old, the store founded by Maureen Lechmere had its origin long before at Pier 39 in San Francisco and when switching to Bath brought her small business and thankfully, it's less miles those I have to go to be able to eat their Salted Caramel. Only regret one thing, we went at closing time because we lost the momento they make the fudge.

TERMAS ROMANAS - BATH, INGLATERRA

É a principal atracção de Bath desde da sua instalação no século 75 d.C. na época de Vespasiano, conhecida pelas suas águas quentes num clima mais fresco continua ainda hoje a ser admirado por muitos dos que visitam a cidade. Graças á sua descoberta no final do século XVIII hoje podemos ver a grande terma que contém no patamar superior as estátuas de vários imperadores romanos entre eles Júlio César, o próprio Vespasiano e Adriano assim como alguns governadores da região.

It is the main attraction of Bath since its building in the 75 century AD at the time of Vespasian, known for its hot water in a cooler climate continues today to be admired by many who visit the city. Thanks to their discovery in the late eighteenth century today we can see the big bath containing in the upper level the statues of several Roman emperors including Julius Caesar, Vespasian himself and Hadrian as well as some governors of the región.

ABADIA DE BATH - INGLATERRA

Bath é uma das cidades mais românticas que já visitei, tem algo de especial que se não fosse pela multidão de turistas com as suas câmaras digitais e os telemóveis colados a um "selfie stick" dirias que parou no tempo. E talvez seja assim, continua a agarrar-se ás histórias de final do século XVIII de Jane Austen e á velha glória das Termas Romanas, mas onde voltei a sentir o seu toque romântico foi na sua Abadia.

Bath is one of the most romantic cities I have ever visited, it has something special that if it was not for the throngs of tourists with their digital cameras and mobile phones glued to a selfie stick you would say it had stopped in time. And maybe so, it continues to cling to Jane Austen stories of the end of the eighteenth century and to the old glory of the Roman Baths, but where I again felt your romantic touch was in it's Abbey.

THE SALAMANDER - BATH, INGLATERRA

Foi o primeiro que fizémos em Bath: comer. Tínhamos alugado um carro em Londres que demorou mais do que estávamos á espera e já chegámos aqui perto da hora de almoço (pelo menos da nossa), tinha uma lista de pubs recomendados e o The Salamander era um deles. É um lugar acolhedor mantendo uma linha de decoração tradicional com alguns detalhes modernos, a carta é a habitual neste tipo de bares mas tinha alguns pratos do dia diferentes.

I was the first we did in Bath: eat. We had rented a car in London that took longer than we were expecting and since we arrived here close to lunch time (at least ours) I had a list of recommended pubs and The Salamander was one of them. It is a cozy place keeping a traditional decor line with some modern details, the menu is the usual in this type of bars but had a few different dishes of the day.

ROYAL CRESCENT - BATH, INGLATERRA

Bath vale a pena visitar mas tenho que admitir que uma grande parte da vontade de o fazer veio dos todos os filmes adaptando os romances de Jane Austen que tinha visto, um deles "Persuasão" termina aqui no Royal Crescent. Estava por isso em pulgas e não é que tenha sido uma decepção mas o facto de não ter visitado a casa do nº1 fez com que a experiência não fosse completa, chegámos ao fecho e já não conseguimos entrar. Seria a cereja no topo do bolo, ver uma como era uma casa na época dourada do Royal Crescent (final do século XVIII).

Bath is worth visiting but I have to admit that much of the desire to do so came from all the films adapting Jane Austen's novels I had seen, one of them "Persuasion" ends here at the Royal Crescent. I was so excited and not that it was a disappointment but the fact of not having visited the # 1 house made the experience incomplete, we arrived at closing hour and could not get in. Would be the icing on the cake to see a house in the Golden Age of Royal Crescent (late eighteenth century).

PATTY & BUN - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

 

"...Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a patty of ground beef so exquisite, swirling in your mouth, breaking apart and combining again in a fugue of sweets and savor so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, Robin. This is God, speaking to us in food." Tive que começar este post com o Marshall do How I Met Your Mother, principalmente porque adoro o final em que Deus fala através da comida. E acho que ele deve ser o conselheiro da Patty & Bun porque têm uns hambuguers muito mas muito bons.

"I had to start this post with Marshall How I Met Your Mother, mainly because I love the end where God speaks through food. And I think he can be the counselor of Patty & Bun because they have very very good burgers.

BIG BEN & PALÁCIO DE WESTMINSTER - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Saiu há pouco tempo uma noticia sobre o Big Ben leva quinze dias com seis segundos de atraso. Uma falha grave para quem se orgulha de dar a hora correcta, exata nem um segundo mais nem um segundo menos. Essa importância do Big Ben que é talvez o relógio e campanário mais famoso do mundo. E eu sempre que vou a Londres tento vê-lo, não para acertar o meu relógio mas porque acho que é uma excelente obra da arquitetura e nunca me canso de admirá-lo (quando posso claro).

 

Not so long ago there was a news about Big Ben that for fifteen days has a six second delay. A serious flaw for who is proud to give the correct, exact time not a second more or one second less. That is Big Ben's importance it is perhaps the most famous clock and bell tower in the world. And whenever I go to London I try to see it, not to set my watch but because I do think it is a great work of architecture and never get tired of admiring it (when I can of course).

ALBERT'S MEMORIAL - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

A fascinante história de amor da Rainha Victoria e o Principe Alberto sente-se em Kensington, no seu Palácio, nos Jardins mas ainda mais no Memorial que mandou erguer depois da morte do marido. A sua construção termina em 1876 e a sua localização junto ao Hyde Park tem um grande significado, o Principe Alberto foi o grande dinamizador da Grande Exposição de 1851 que se realizou nesse loval, uma exposição universal que de alguma forma se vê também homenageada neste Memorial.

 

The fascinating love story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert sets the mood in Kensington, in its palace, the gardens but even more in the Memorial that she had built after her husband's death. Its construction ends in 1876 and its location next to Hyde Park has great significance, the Prince Albert was the great promoter of the Great Exhibition of 1851 that took place close by, a universal exhibition that somehow see also honored in this memorial.

HARROD'S - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Penso em Harrods e inevitavelmente penso na serie Mr. Selfridge, um dos seus grandes rivais. Além disso penso no ursinho Harrods com o seu lacinho porque é do que mais me lembro de quando entrei por primeira vez nesta grande loja de produtos de luxo. Tinha 14 anos e o que mais queria era levar um urso desses para casa, era o primeiro que viamos quando entravamos na loja hoje em dia as grandes marcas de designers tomaram conta do espaço porque é o que se procura.

 

I think of Harrods and inevitably think of the series Mr. Selfridge, one of its major rivals. Also I think of Harrods teddy bear with his bow and because it is what I remember best from when I came for the first time to this large luxury goods store. I was 14 and what I wanted most was to take a bear home, was the first we used to see when we entered the store nowadays the great designer brands have taken over the space because it is what is people demand the most.

PORTOBELLO MARKET - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Descobri Portobello ao mesmo tempo que o filme do Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts, Notting Hill. Desde então quando vou a Londres procuro ruas circulares com pequenas casas coloridas e um banco de madeira num frondoso jardim...mas se vamos a Portobello em dias de mercado encontramos exatamente o contrário, mal conseguimos ver as casas e há uma multidão de pessoas que procuram pechinchas, antiguidades ou simplesmente vão passear.

 

Portobello I discovered at the same of the Hugh Grant's and Julia Roberts movie, Notting Hill. Since then when I go to London I look for the crescent street with small colorful houses and a wooden bench in a garden ... but if we go to Portobello on a market day we find just the opposite, we can hardly see the houses behind it and there is a crowd of people looking for bargains, antiques or simply go sightseeing.

KENSINGTON PALACE - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

É a residência oficial dos duques de Cambridge, foi a casa da Princesa Diana e foi o lugar onde nasceu a Rainha Vitória, tudo isto acrescenta á visita do Kensington Palace, porque umas poucas paredes separam o museu da casa real. Logo ao entrar vemos as referências á Princesa Diana e á Rainha Vitória, a visita começa com a história da vida de esta última com peças que vão desde a sua infância até aos seus últimos dias como Rainha de Inglaterra.

 

It is the official residence of the Dukes of Cambridge, was the home of Princess Diana and was the birthplace of Queen Victoria, all this adds to the visit of the Kensington Palace, because a few walls separate the royal house from the museum. And as soon as we go in we can see the references to Princess Diana and Queen Victoria, the visit begins with the story of the life of the latter with pieces ranging from her childhood up to his last days as Queen of England.

KENSINGTON GARDENS - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

É um dos Royal Parks de London e fazia parte dos jardins privados do Palácio de Kensington, onde nasceu a Princesa Vitória e onde após a noticia da morte do seu tio se tornou Rainha. Colado ao Hyde Park é difícil perceber onde um termina e o outro começa, mas o melhor é que tem muito para ver e é o plano ideal para o fim de semana quando queres dar um passeio. São 111 hectares de verde, lagos, esculturas, esplanadas e jardins secretos.

 

It is one of the Royal Parks of London and was part of the private gardens of Kensington Palace, where Princess Victoria was born and where after the news of the death of his uncle became Queen.
