Subsequent to our trip to Salzburg had to see "The Sound of Music" again. I did not remember almost nothing of the movie and then saw that one of the most famous songs of the movie where Maria leads the children of the Von Trapp take a stroll through Salzburg singing Do Re Mi and at the end enter the jardin Mirabell.
The gardens were created in the late seventeenth century at the request of the Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun and returned to be refurbished in 1730. Near the main entrance of the palace is the source of Pegasus created by Kaspar Gras and the stairs leading to the garden of the dwarves who also appears in the film Sound of Music.
I enjoyed the Hedge Theatre that has been created between 1704 and 1718 where even today you can see performances.
We entered the garden by Makartplatz and is free to visit. The first think that we see is the immensity of the Grand Parterre with its fountains and sculptures of Roman gods (seventeenth century) representing Diana, Flora, Minerva, Venus, Bacchus, Jupiter, Hercules among others. The fountain in the center is surrounded by other statues representing the Rape of Proserpina, Helena, Anchises and Aeneas from Virgil's Aeneid and also a Hercules wrestling with Antaeus.
In this side of the Orangerie with a little garden, more peaceful and where we can contemplate the fountain of Papagena.
This was one of my favorite places of Salzburg and from it we can also see the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Cathedral.
