KARLSPLATZ - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Chegámos á Karlsplatz depois de visitar o Palácio de Verão da familia real, já estava um pouco cansada mas a animação do mercado de Natal com a Karlskirche como pano de fundo fez ganhar um novo fôlego. É uma das maiores da cidade e á sua volta para além da igreja podemos encontrar uma universidade, o Musikverein (uma sala de concertos) e pelo Künstlerhaus, assim como dos pavilhões desenhados por Otto Wagner.

We reached the Karlsplatz after visiting the Summer Palace of the Royal family, I was already a little tired but the animation of the Christmas market with the Karlskirche as a backdrop made me regain my strenght. It is one of the city's largest squares and around it, in addition to the church we can find a university, the Musikverein (concert hall) and the Künstlerhaus, we can also see the pavilions designed by Otto Wagner.

PRAÇA MARIA TERESA - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Ao passear pela cidade fui descobrindo também a história do grande Império Austro-Húngaro e sobre a extraordinária Casa dos Habsburgo, a mesma que governou Espanha com o Imperador Carlos V. Mas esta praça está dedicada a uma mulher, a única Habsburgo a ser coroada Rainha e a governar várias regiões que se estendiam até Itália, Maria Teresa e os seus muitos nomes próprios como Amália e Cristina. Ao centro está um monumento dedicado a uma soberana que conta a história foi muito feliz ao lado do seu marido, teve vários filhos (era a mãe de Maria Antonieta) e governou durante quarenta anos um dos impérios mais invejados do mundo.

As you stroll through the city I was also discovering the history of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire and the extraordinary House of Habsburg, the same that ruled Spain with the Emperor Charles V. But this square is dedicated to a woman, the only Habsurg to be crowned Queen and to govern various regions extending to Italy, Maria Teresa and her many names like Amalia and Cristina. At the center there is a monument dedicated to a sovereign that the story tells that was very happy with her husband, she had several children (she was the mother of Marie Antoinette) and ruled for forty years one of the most envied empires of the world.

PLAZA DEL TRIUNFO - SEVILHA, ESPANHA

Nesta praça estão três edificios considerados Património Mundial por parte da UNESCO: a Catedral, o Alcázar e o Arquivo General de Indias que convivem numa estranha harmonia arquitetónica já que não têm muito em comum, a Catedral foi construída entre os séculos XV e XVI com um estilo gótico, a Casa de la Lonja onde está o Arquivo foi construída no final do século XVI e o Alcázar teve várias fases de construção que lhe deu características do gótico e do estilo mudéjar.

In this square are three buildings considered World Heritage by UNESCO: the Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Indias General Archive who live in a strange architectural harmony as they do not have much in common, the Cathedral was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with a gothic style, Casa de la Lonja where the Archive is was built in the late sixteenth century and the Alcázar had several phases of construction that gave it characteristics of gothic and Mudejar style.

PLAZA VIRGEN DE LOS REYES - SEVILHA, ESPANHA

Esta praça é a porta de entrada ao Bairro da Santa Cruz e tem uma das melhores vistas para a Giralda que é sem dúvida o edificio mais marcante mas não é o único. Aqui encontramos o Palácio Arzobispal e no lado oposto o Convento de la Encarnación. Históricamente era conhecido como o Corral de los Olmos pelos encontros políticos que aqui se davam para discutir vários temas da cidade. Hoje é um ponto de encontro para os que querem começar a sua visita pela cidade.

This square is the gateway to the Santa Cruz district and has one of the best views of the Giralda which is arguably the most striking building but not the only one. Here we find the Archbishop's Palace and on the side opposite the Convent of la Encarnación. Historically was known as the Corral de los Olmos because of the political meetings held here they got on to discuss various topics of the city. Today is a meeting point for those who want to start their tour of the city. 

PLAZA DE LA VIRGEN - VALÊNCIA, ESPANHA

Eu diria que é a Praça mais bonita da cidade com vistas para a Catedral e para a Basílica da Virgem dos Desamparados, com uma fonte que faz lembrar a Piazza Navona em Roma e suficientes esplanadas para aproveitar tudo isto. Dizem que a melhor maneira de a conhecer é desde o Miguelete junto á Catedral, a altura ajuda a entender a dimensão de esta praça que é um ponto de encontro para os valencianos.

I would say it is the most beautiful square in town overlooking the Cathedral and the Basilica of the Virgin of Desamparados, with a fountain reminiscent of the Piazza Navona in Rome and sufficient terraces to enjoy all this. They say the best way to discover it is from the Miguelete near the Cathedral, height helps to understand the size of this square which is a meeting point for the Valencians.

PLAZA MAYOR - LEÓN, ESPANHA

A Plaza Mayor foi o último que visitámos em León, não é muito diferente a tantas outras praças Mayor com as suas arcadas, com a casa do municipio, as pequenas varandas e os cafés com esplanada mas a beleza de esta é que conservou o seu traçado típico. Foi construída no século XVII no Bairro Humedo e estava fora das muralhas medievais da cidade.

 

The Plaza Mayor was the last we visited in León, it is not very different of so many other Mayor squares with its arcades, the house of the municipality, small balconies and terrace cafés but the beauty of this is that it saved it's original arquitecture. It was built in the seventeenth century in Humedo quarter and was outside the medieval city walls.

PRAÇA DA FIGUEIRA - LISBOA, PORTUGAL

A praça da Figueira sempre me pareceu uma das mais decadentes da cidade, ainda hoje podemos ver algum edificio deteriorado algo que no meu ponto de vista não se justifica para a localização que tem no entanto vejo-a já com outros olhos, muitos foram recuperados e têm uma cara mais limpa. Antes do celébre Terramoto esteve aqui um Hospital, depois instalou-se um mercado que deixou de funcionar em 1941 mas ficou o Mercado da Praça da Figueira que tenta recriar o antigo que aqui existiu.

 

The square Figueira always seemed one of the most decadent city, we can still see some deteriorated building something that in my view there is no justification because of it's location however I already see it with different eyes, many were recovered and have a cleaner face. Before the famous earthquake there was here one hospital, then settled a market that ended in 1941 but the Mercado da Praça da Figueira remains trying to recreate the one that existed here years ago.

PLAZA DE LA VIRGEN BLANCA - VITORIA, ESPANHA

Aqui começa a vida em Vitoria, na praça da Virgem Branca e como fomos nos primeiros dias de este ano ainda mais porque estava montada ao centro uma pista de gelo para além de outras actividades interessantes principalmente para as crianças. Chama a atenção a estátua dedicada á Batalha de Vitoria de 1803, onde as tropas aliadas (Espanha e Inglaterra) venceram as tropas francesas lideradas por José Bonaparte que ocupavam o país nessa altura.

 

Here begins life in Vitoria, in the White Virgin (Virgen Blanca) square and as we were at the beginning of this year it's even more lively because it had at the center  an ice rink as well as other interesting activities especially for children. Draws attention the statue dedicated to the Battle of Vitoria, 1803, where the allied troops (Spain and England) won the French troops led by Joseph Bonaparte who occupied the country at that time.

PLACE VENDÔME - PARIS, FRANÇA

Não foi a melhor altura para descubrir a Place Vendôme, uma das que sempre quis visitar quando estive em Paris mas por um motivo ou outro nunca consegui e ainda não foi desta porque uma boa parte da praça está em obras. Ainda assim não deixa de ter o seu encanto, gostei muito de a ver rodeada de elegantes edificios construídos no século XVIII durante o reinado de Luís XIV (o Rei Sol) pelo mesmo arquitecto responsável pelo Palácio de Versalhes.

 

It was not the best time to discover the Place Vendome, one that always wanted to visit when I was in Paris but for one reason or another never got to do so and still was not this time because a good part of the square is being rebuilt. Still not without its charm, I really enjoyed seing the elegant buildings that surround the square built in the eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XIV (the Sun King) by the same architect responsible for the Palace of Versailles.

do: PLAZA DE SAN ILDEFONSO - MADRID, ESPANHA

Andávamos "perdidos" por Malasaña quando chegámos a esta agradável praça dedicada a San Ildefonso de Toledo que conta a lenda terá recebido uma casula da Virgem numa aparição. Aqui está uma igreja dedicada ao Santo que estava fechada e o outro grande ponto de interesse era o seu Mercado que fechou em 1970 mas reabriu agora na sua versão mais moderna perto da Fuencarral. (ver post Mercado San Ildefonso)

We had been "lost" in Malasaña when we got into this pleasant square dedicated to San Ildefonso of Toledo that legend says received a chasuble during an apparition of the Virgin. Here is a church dedicated to the saint that was closed and the other major point of interest was their Market which closed in 1970 but reopened now in its most modern version near the Fuencarral. (see post Mercado San Ildefonso)

do: PLAZA REAL - ARÉVALO, ESPANHA

Para além das suas igrejas, as Praças de Arévalo são de particular interesse e com uma boa carga histórica. Não foi a minha favorita (a Praza de la Villa é especial) mas não deixa de ser essencial para conhecer um pouco mais sobre a cidade que acolheu a familia real que justifica a origem do seu nome já que em tempos esteve aqui o Palácio onde viveram os Trastâmara.

 

Besides it's churches, Arévalo's squares (plazas) are of particular interest and with a good historical content. This was not my favorite (the Plaza de la Villa is special) but it is still essential to know a little more about the city that housed the royal family which explains the origin of its name since once it has been here the Palace where Trastámara lived.

Caminhar pelas ruas de Arévalo foi uma verdadeira surpresa, sempre fui a trabalho mas com o objectivo de "conquistar" o seu Castelo com os miúdos decidimos explorar o resto da cidade. A Plaza de la Villa foi o nosso lugar preferido, um excelente exemplo da arquitectura popular espanhola com as casas de construção medieval com arcadas cujos pilares de pedra e madeira ainda hoje as mantêm de pé.

 

Walking the streets of Arévalo was a real surprise, I always went for work but now with the aim to "conquer" the castle with the kids we have decided to explore the rest of the city. The Plaza de la Villa was our favorite place, an excellent example of Spanish popular architecture medieval houses with arches whose pillars of stone and wood still keep them standing.

do: PLAZA DE LAS CORTES - MADRID, ESPANHA

O edificio mais importante de esta praça é o antigo de Las Cortes que hoje é conhecido como Congresso dos Deputados (Congreso de los Diputados) e sede do parlamento.
Foi construído onde existiu um antigo convento que no século XIX foi destruído num incêndio. O actual edificio foi projectado por Narciso Pascual y Colomer em 1843 e para além da sua impressionante fachada, a principal atracção são os seus leões de bronze criados em 1866 utilizando material de canhões.

 

The most important building of this square is the old Las Cortes that is now known as the Congress of Deputies (Congreso de los Diputados) and seat of parliament.
It was built in the place where an old convent used to stand and in the nineteenth century it was destroyed in a fire. The current building was designed by Narciso Pascual y Colomer in 1843 and in addition to its impressive façade, the main attraction is the bronze lions created in 1866 using cannon material.

Uma das praças mais bonitas da cidade é o local onde podemos encontrar o elegante Hotel de Bourgtherould que ocupa um palácio renascentista com o mesmo nome e alguns dos seus restaurantes mais modernos com esplanadas que com o bom tempo que fazia, vimos bastante animadas.

O seu nome é completo é La Pucelle (Dama) de Orleães, uma referência ao nome pelo qual Joana D'Arc é conhecida e mais uma homenagem a esta heroína francesa.

 

One of the most beautiful squares in the city is the place where you can find the elegant Hotel de Bourgtherould which occupies a Renaissance palace with the same name and some of its most modern restaurants with terraces that with the good weather of that day, we saw them quite animated.
Its complete name is La Pucelle (Lady) of Orleans, a reference to the name by which Joan of Arc is known and another tribute to this French heroine.

do: PRAÇA DO MERCADO ANTIGO - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Na mais importante praça de Rouen podemos encontrar as ruínas de uma antiga igreja, o lugar onde morreu Joana D'Arc, as belas casas medievais construídas em enxaimel e vários restaurantes com esplanada que tornam o seu ambiente ainda mais agradável. Recheada de história, está marcada por esse evento do dia 30 de Maio de 1431 em que Joana D'Arc foi queimada viva e que hoje no seu lugar está uma cruz para além de uma estátua sua.

 

In the most important square of Rouen we find the ruins of an old church, the place where Joan of Arc died, the beautiful half-timbered medieval houses built and several restaurants with outdoor seating that make it's mood even more pleasant. Full of history, it's marked by this event on May 30, 1431 when Joan of Arc was burned alive and now in its place is a cross also a statue in her honor.

do: PRAÇA LUÍS DE CAMÕES - LISBOA, PORTUGAL

Ponto de encontro. É a primeira coisa que me vem á cabeça quando penso na Praça Luís de Camões. Foi, é e seguirá sendo um dos principais pontos da vida social de Lisboa, reinventar-se mesmo quando por exemplo o Bairro Alto está em baixa, aqui é o sitio onde muitos se juntam para começar o dia mas principalmente para começar noite.
É por isso normal ver muita animação de gente por aqui, muitos sentados aos pés de Camões a conviver ou a contemplar esta parte da cidade.

Meeting point. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Luís de Camões Square. Was, is and will remain a major point of social life in Lisbon reinventing itself even when for example the Bairro Alto is not in it's highest, here is the place where many gather to start the day but mainly to start the night.
It is normal to see a great buzz of people here, many sitting at the feet of Camões hanging out or contemplating this part of town.

do: UNION SQUARE - NOVA IORQUE, EUA

Caminhávamos em direcção a Little Italy quando nos chamou a atenção a animação que encontrámos na Union Square e que nos fez desviar do nosso objectivo inicial. Tinha muita gente sentada nas suas escadas a apanhar sol, artistas de rua a animar a praça como um grupo de rapazes a dançar hip hop e ao centro está a estátua do primeiro presidente dos EUA, George Washington.

do: ROCKFELLER CENTER LOWER PLAZA - NOVA IORQUE, EUA

Ao sair do miradouro do Rockefeller Center passámos por esta icónica praça que ganha maior protagonismo no Natal com o seu ringue de patinagem no gelo e a famosa árvore cuja iluminação tem direito a uma cerimónia própria. Como fomos em Abril tivémos que nos contentar com os extraordinários detalhes de esta praça construída no centro do grande complexo de edificios e segue a sua linha de Art Déco da época.  

do: ODEONPLATZ - MUNIQUE, ALEMANHA

Ludwig I mandou construir a Odeonplatz em 1816 e é onde podemos encontrar alguns dos monumentos mais importantes da cidade cuja arquitectura é na sua maioria de inspiração italiana. O primeiro é o Residenz, o grande palácio que serviu como residência oficial da Casa de Wittelsbach (a familia real da Baviera) e cuja entrada oeste podemos contemplar desde Odeonplatz.

 

Ludwig I had the Odeonplatz built in 1816 and is where we can find some of the most important monuments of the city whose architecture is mostly Italian-inspired. The first is the Residenz, the great palace that served as the official residence of the House of Wittelsbach (the royal family of Bavaria) and whose western entrance since we can contemplate Odeonplatz.

do: PROMENADEPLATZ - MUNIQUE, ALEMANHA

Rodeada de elegantes edificios a Promenadeplatz tem ao centro um pequeno passeio com um jardim que lhe dá o nome e onde a cidade de Munique presta homenagem a algumas personagens influentes da sua história. Um dos que mais no impressionou foi a do Conde de Montgelas desenhada em 2005 através de novas tecnologías e construída em aluminio.

 

Surrounded by elegant buildings the Promenadeplatz has a short stroll in the center with a garden that gives it the name and where the city of Munich pays tribute to some influential figures in its history. One of the most impressive to me was of the Count of Montgelas drawn in 2005 through new technologies and built in aluminum.
