MERCADO NATAL PRAÇA MARIA TERESA - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Foi o primeiro mercado de Natal que visitei em Viena, pareceu-me mais pequeno que o da Rathausplatz mas tinha o mesmo tipo de casetas de madeira que vendem decorações de todo o tipo, grande parte artesanato além dos tradicionais bares com o Glühwein, sandes com enchidos da região, kartoffel (batatas), entre outras propostas gastronómicas. Mas então qual é a diferença? Porque é que quem vê um vê que é igual ao outro?

It was the first Christmas market that I visited in Vienna, it seemed smaller than the Rathausplatz but had the same type of wooden houses selling decorations of all kinds, much of crafts in addition to the traditional bars with Glühwein, sandwiches with stuffed region, Kartoffel (potatoes), among other gastronomic proposals. MERCADO NATAL RATHAUSPLATZ - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Viena tem mais mercados de Natal que alguma vez imaginava, cada praça e recanto tinha umas casitas que vendiam entre o vinho quente (glühwein), especialidades locais e artesanato de todo o tipo seja para decoração de Natal ou para oferecer. Mas o rei de estes mercados é o Christmas Advent na praça do Rathaus (Praça do Municipio) e a melhor hora para o visitar é quando já cai a noite, nessa altura podemos ver as suas decorações iluminadas.

Vienna has more Christmas markets than ever imagined, each square and cranny had a casitas that sold between the mulled wine (glühwein), local specialties and crafts of all kinds is for Christmas decoration or to offer. MERCADO CENTRAL - VALÊNCIA, ESPANHA

Da primeira vez que fomos a Valência cometemos o erro de tentar visitar o Mercat Central a um domingo, estava fechado e ao ver o seu extraordinário edificio apenas por fora sabíamos que ao voltar á cidade teríamos que o visitar. Assim foi. Mas se é digno de se ver por fora por dentro é simplesmente incrível, com a sua arquitetura do principio do século XX e as bancas que vendem desde frutas e verduras a presunto da melhor qualidade.

The first time we went to Valencia we made the mistake of trying to visit the Mercat Central on a Sunday, it was closed and we did see its extraordinary building just outside knew that when he returned to the city would have to visit. MERCADO DE LA PAZ - MADRID, ESPANHA

Há muito tempo que tinha curiosidade de conhecer o Mercado de la Paz que está no bairro de Salamanca na Calle de Ayala. Abriu em 1882 e foi criado a partir de um desenho de nada mais nada menos que Augusto Eiffel. Com uma cara mais renovada continua a manter as sua essência: abastecer o bairro de Salamanca com produtos frescos desde verduras, frutas, peixe, marisco, carne entre outros.

For a long time I was curious to know the de la Paz market that is in the Salamanca district on Calle de Ayala. It opened in 1882 and was created from a drawing of no one less than Augusto Eiffel. With a renwed face it continues to keep its essence: supply the Salamanca district with fresh produce from vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, meat and others.

PORTOBELLO MARKET - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

Descobri Portobello ao mesmo tempo que o filme do Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts, Notting Hill. Desde então quando vou a Londres procuro ruas circulares com pequenas casas coloridas e um banco de madeira num frondoso jardim...mas se vamos a Portobello em dias de mercado encontramos exatamente o contrário, mal conseguimos ver as casas e há uma multidão de pessoas que procuram pechinchas, antiguidades ou simplesmente vão passear.

 

Portobello I discovered at the same of the Hugh Grant's and Julia Roberts movie, Notting Hill. Since then when I go to London I look for the crescent street with small colorful houses and a wooden bench in a garden ... but if we go to Portobello on a market day we find just the opposite, we can hardly see the houses behind it and there is a crowd of people looking for bargains, antiques or simply go sightseeing.

COVENT GARDEN MARKET - LONDRES, INGLATERRA

É um dos mercados mais recomendados e requisitados no centro de Londres, nós fomos ás três da tarde e os restaurantes ainda estavam a abarrotar, mesmo pelos corredores havia muita gente a ver montras. Instalado num edificio neo-clássico do século XIX recuperado nos anos oitenta para voltar a cumprir a sua função, está totalmente coberto o que permite fazer compras ou comer na sua esplanada independentemente do tempo. Nós entrámos pelo Apple Market, uma zona com pequenas bancas que vendem artesanato na sua maioria bijuteria, roupa e fotografia.

MERCADO ROMANO - LEÓN, ESPANHA

Fomos surpreendidos pela Legião de soldados Romanos que invadiu as ruas de León, não sabíamos que tínhamos ido no fim de semana do Mercado que celebra o Natalicio da Águila (o nascimento da Águia o símbolo das legiões de Roma Antiga) cujo programa inclui o desfile das tropas, teatros, música pelas ruas, bancas que vendem productos artesanais e até uma zona de restaurante tudo com detalhes da época.

 

We were surprised by the Legion of Roman soldiers who invaded the streets of León, we knew that we had gone on the market of the weekend celebrating the Natalicio the Águila (the birth of the eagle symbol of the legions of ancient Rome) whose program includes the parade of troops, theaters, music in the streets, stalls selling handmade products and even a restaurant area with all details of the time.

Logo depois da Plaza Mayor está um mercado de Natal mais pequeno na Plaza Jacinto Benavente, é uma boa alternativa porque tem menos gente e podemos encontrar aqui muitos dos productos que se vendem nos outros. Foi onde vi o maior número de bancas com artigos em pele e de boa qualidade, é um excelente lugar para fazer compras de Natal se não tens ideias de que comprar.

 

Right after the Plaza Mayor is a smaller Christmas market in Plaza Jacinto Benavente, is a good alternative because it has fewer people and we can find here a lot of products that are sold in others. It was where I saw the largest number of stalls with leather goods and of good quality, it's an excelent place to do some Christmas shopping if you do not have ideas of what to buy.

Todos os anos vou ao Mercado de Natal da Plaza Mayor em Madrid, normalmente tento ir a uma hora mais tranquila mas desta vez não foi possível e encontrei um mar de gente. Não lhe retirou o encanto mas não consegui chegar a nenhuma bancada porque era simplesmente impossível, desta vez trazia uma lista de coisas porque uma das especialidades do Mercado são as figuras do presépio e eu procurava o José.

THE HOVSE - MADRID, ESPANHA

Uma tarde de Domingo em Madrid com multidões nas lojas e ruas no centro faz com que o The Hovse seja o paraíso. Localizado na zona de Chamberí, é um pop-up market organizado pela Better os mesmos que trouxeram The Apartment e no Verão o The Patio. Transformaram o número 40 e os seus quatro pisos numa excelente montra para artistas, designers e pequenas empresas locais, claro que mesmo que vás sem intenção de comprar, sempre acabas por levar algo e no meu caso foram os guias do Walkwithme e um guia de Barcelona do Mr.Wonderful para oferecer uma grande amiga este Natal.

One Sunday afternoon in Madrid with crowds in the stores and streets in the center makes the The Hovse a paradise. Located in the Chamberí area, is a pop-up market organized by the Better the same who brought The Apartment and The Patio in the summer. A passear pelo bairro de Malasaña encontrámos um dos novos mercados da zona: o San Ildefonso. Um Street market & co. que abriu este ano de Verão e que procura replicar outros que existem em cidades como Nova Iorque e Londres. Ainda que se assuma diferente dos demais que vão ocupando o seu espaço na oferta gastronómica da cidade achei que o conceito é na sua essência o mesmo, um lugar de encontro social á volta de uma cerveja e boa comida.

A stroll through the neighborhood of Malasaña found one of the new market in the area: the San Ildefonso. A Street Market & co. which opened this year in that summer that seeks to replicate those that exist in other cities like New York and London. Even if it assumes has something different from the others who are getting their space in the culinary offerings of the city I did thought the concept is the same in essence, a place of social gathering around a beer and good food.

do: MERCADO CERVANTINO - ALCALÁ DE HENARES, ESPANHA

Todos os anos em Outubro decorre em Alcalá de Henares, a Semana Cervantina em honra a Miguel Cervantes que dizem ter nascido nesta cidade. A sua maior obra Don Quixote de La Mancha é o tema de este evento que faz circular mais de cem mil pessoas pelas ruas do centro histórico de Alcalá. Nós fomos ao último fim de semana e foi uma agradável surpresa, já tinha estado em mercados medievais mas este tem uma outra dimensão.

 

Every year in October held in Alcalá de Henares, Cervantina Week (Semana Cervantina) in honor of Miguel Cervantes that is said to have been born in this city. Aproveitando as nossas férias de Verão em Lisboa fomos almoçar ao Time Out Mercado da Ribeira e que já se tornou um espaço de referência gastronómica com a ajuda da revista que lhe dá o nome que todas as semanas publica um artigo sobre as novidades que por lá podemos encontrar e provar. O verdadeiro Mercado da Ribeira continua a funcionar com as bancas da fruta e verdura e gostaria de acreditar que ter um vizinho tão famoso reanime o gosto por comprar nos mercados. 

 

Taking advantage of our summer holidays in Lisbon we went to lunch at Time Out Mercado da Ribeira and has already become a gastronomic reference with the help of the magazine that gives it's name that every week publishes an article on the new things one can find and taste here. The real Ribeira Market continues to work with the stalls of fruit and vegetables and I would like to believe that having such a famous neighbor will revive the taste for shopping in these more traditional markets.

eat: MERCADO CAMPO DE OURIQUE - LISBOA, PORTUGAL

Durante algum tempo o meu Bloglovin e Instagram enchia-se de fotos e posts do Mercado de Campo de Ourique. Tinha muita vontade de visitá-lo também para comprovar as suas semelhanças (e diferenças) com o famoso Mercado de San Miguel aqui de Madrid, mas só na nossa última viagem a  Portugal agora em Fevereiro consegui arranjar um tempo para lá ir. Fomos na sexta-feira, tentámos ir antes das oito da noite para não apanhar muita gente mas quando algo está na moda, está e por isso estava á pinha.

 

For some time my Bloglovin and Instagram was filled with photos and posts from the Campo de Ourique Market. Had long wanted to visit also to check it's similarities (and differences) with the famous Mercado de San Miguel from Madrid, but only on our last trip to Portugal in February I could arrange a time to go there. We went on a Friday, we tried to go before eight in the evening to catch it more empty but when something is in fashion, it is and therefore it was packed.

Numa viagem de trabalho a Münster o meu marido teve algum tempo livre e aproveitou para visitar o Mercado de Natal da cidade. Desta vez pedi para tirar fotos para me ir detalhando o que mais gostou e claro, foi o que fosse relacionado com a comida: adorou comer Currywurst, beber o Glühwein (vino quente) e voltar a comer um Kartoffelpuffer (uma espécie de patanisca com batata e cebola) servido com puré de maçã.

 

On a business trip to Münster my husband had some free time and took the opportunity to visit the Christmas market in the city. This time I asked him to take pictures for me and give me a full report of what he liked most and it was obvious, that it was everything related to the food: he loved eating the Currywurst, drink Glühwein (hot wine) and come back to eat a Kartoffelpuffer (a kind of potato pancake with onion) served with applesauce.

shop: MERCADO DOS MOTORES - MADRID, ESPANHA

Em cada segundo fim de semana do mês, o recatado Museu do Ferrocarril em Delicias (perto da Atocha) torna-se num dos sitios mais concorridos da cidade graças a este Mercado. Está divido em três grandes áreas, uma é no interior do museu onde a nossa atenção se divide entre as locomotivas históricas e as a pequenas bancas onde se podía comprar desde produtos gourmet, a bicicletas, peças de arte, bijuteria, roupa, objectos de decoração e uma boa dose de ideias originais á espera de serem descobertos.

Every second weekend of the month, the demured Ferrocarril Museum in Delicias (near Atocha) becomes one of the busiest places of the city thanks to this market. It's divided into three main areas, one is inside the museum where our attention is divided between the historic locomotives and the small stalls where you could buy everything from gourmet food to bicycles, pieces of art, jewelry, clothing, decorative objects and a good deal of original ideas waiting to be discovered.

shop: MERCADO DO BOLHÃO - PORTO, PORTUGAL

Ontem ia a escrever sobre este Mercado quando vi este um post neste blog: Los Apuntes del Viajero a falar do Mercado de La Boquería de Barcelona e acabei por fechar o blogger pensando porque é que o Bolhão não podía ser assim? Ao ver as suas fotos e as minhas (que é verdade que não sou grande fotógrafa) ficou ainda mais claro, são dois mundos á parte mas deixou-me com um pouco de esperança que os bons exemplos de fora inspirem o Porto e os responsáveis do Bolhão porque na minha (humilde e pouco especializada) opinião precisa de uma renovação e não uma transformação em shopping center porque a cidade já tem suficientes.

 

Yesterday I was going to write about this market when I saw this one in this blog post: Los Apuntes del Viajero talking about La Boqueria Market in Barcelona and ended up closing blogger wondering why the Bolhão could not be like this? Seeing his photos and mine (it's true that I am no great photographer) became even more clear, they are two worlds apart but left me with some hope that good examples from outside may inspire Porto and the leaders of Bolhão because in my (humble and low skilled) opinion it needs a makeover and not a transformation to a shopping center because the city has enough.

Se tivesse que escolher qual o meu lugar preferido em Munique este talvez seria o escolhido porque o Viktualienmarkt permite fazer de tudo um pouco: comer, beber, comprar e conviver. É uma experiência completa num só local.

Está aberto todos os dias e as suas barracas vendem de tudo um pouco: legumes, fruta, queijo, "picles" que os locais adoram, enchidos regionais, artesanato, mel, vinho, etc..

 

If I had to choose what is my favorite place in Munich this may be the chosen one because the Viktualienmarkt allows you do a bit of everything: eat, drink, shop and socialize. It is a complete experience in one place.
It's open every day and their stalls sell a bit of everything: vegetables, fruit, cheese, gherkins that locals love, regional sausages, crafts, honey, wine, etc..

shop: ALBERT CUYPMARKT - AMSTERDÃO, HOLANDA

Quanto mais penso na escolha de hotel (e como foi uma opção cara) mais vejo que foi acertada porque estavámos ao lado do De Pijp, o animado bairro a que chamam "Quartier Latin". Uma das suas ruas mais agitadas é a Albert Cuyp onde de segunda a sábado podemos visitar o seu mercado.

Dizem que o melhor dia para ir é o Sábado, há mais gente, mais agitação e também mais bancas, foi precisamente o dia que fomos e nem mesmo a chuva impedia que se fizesse a compra aqui.

Esta é a terceira vez que vamos ao Mercado de Natal de Madrid, sem grandes inovações devo dizer. As bancadas vendem o mesmo tipo de coisas entre as personagens para os presépios, musgo, árvores de natal, enfeites, gorros de Natal e o carrossel também o mesmo. Pouco mudou de 2011 para 2012, talvez só a iluminação da praça que apesar de não ter visto a funcionar reparei que era diferente do ano passado.

 

This is the third time we go to the Christmas market in Madrid, without major innovations I must say. Stalls sell the same type of things from the characters to the nativity sets, moss, Christmas trees, ornaments, Christmas hats and the same carousel. Little has changed from 2011 to 2012, maybe just the lighting of the square that despite not having seen the work I noticed that was different from last year.
