do: CASTELO SFORZESCO - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

Quando chegámos ao Castelo Sforzesco a chuva e o frio não nos davam tréguas, não foi o momento certo para o conhecer mas tínhamos pouco tempo em Milão e queríamos aproveitar da melhor maneira. O Castelo que vemos actualmente foi construído no lugar de um outro edificado para a familia Visconti que pelo século XV governava a cidade. Mais tarde Francesco Sforza - duque de Milão - mandou construir um palácio renascentista. Para entrar temos que passar pela Torre de Filarete cujo o nome vem do arquitecto que a criou.

When we reached the Castello Sforzesco the rain and cold did not give us any truce, it was not the best way to discover it but we had little time in Milan and wanted to make the most of it. The castle we see today was built in the place of another built by the Visconti family who ruled the city in the fifteenth century. Later Francesco Sforza - Duke of Milan - built a Renaissance palace. To go in we have to go through the Filarete tower whose name comes from the architect who created it.

eat: DA CECCO - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

O restaurante e pizzaria Da Cecco foi uma descoberta, das melhores que fizémos em Milão (senão a melhor) porque não sei se conseguiríamos chegar até ele sem a ajuda do simpático recepcionista do nosso hotel. É daqueles restaurantes muito apreciado pelos locais afastado das zonas turísticas e com a genuina cozinha italiana num espaço simples sem grande atenção á decoração.

The restaurant and pizzeria Da Cecco was a discovery, of the best we've done in Milan (if not better) because I do not know if we could get to it without the help of the friendly receptionist of our hotel. It is one of those restaurants much appreciated by those local away from the tourist areas and with the genuine Italian cuisine in a simple area without much attention to the decor.

sleep: NH TOURING - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

Como em Florença tínhamos ficado no NH e para ir juntando pontos decidimos procurar em Milão um hotel do mesmo grupo, estava dentro dos preços que tínhamos em mente e teria que ser um quarto confortável porque íamos com um bébé. Além disso queríamos um hotel perto da estação de comboios (Milano Centrale) pelo regresso de Florença e porque para voltar para o aeroporto queríamos utilizar esse meio de transporte (os táxis são muito caros). Por tudo isto escolhemos o NH Touring.

As in Florence we stayed in a NH hotel and to add more points we decided to search for a hotel in Milan of the same group, it was within the price of what we had in mind and that would be a comfortable room because we were with a baby. Also we wanted a hotel near the train station (Milano Centrale) as returned from Florence and because to return to the airport  we wanted to use this transport (taxis are very expensive). For all this we chose the NH Touring.

shop: QUADRILATERO D'ORO - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

Uma das zonas mais famosas da cidade não é um monumento histórico, não tem nenhuma catedral mas não deixa de ser um lugar de culto, um lugar onde mesmo que não vás comprar nada tens que passar por ali. Tem as melhores lojas de moda de Milão e as ruas que estabelecem a fronteira são a Montenapoleane, a Della Spiga, a Manzoni e a Sant'Andrea. Pelo meio estão ruas mais estreitas como a Via Gesú e a San Spirito.

One of the most famous areas of the city is not a historical monument, has no cathedral but it is still a place of worship, a place where even if you do not go to buy something you have to walk by. It has the best fashion stores in Milan and the streets that establish the border are Montenapoleane, Della Spiga, Sant'Andrea and Manzoni. In the middle there are narrower streets like Via Gesu and San Spirito.

shop: STRADA NOVA - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Pela sua localização estratégica no Mar Adriático, Veneza prosperou por ser um dos mais importantes centros do comércio internacional e ainda hoje o seu dia á dia gira á sua volta. A Strada Nova é uma animada rua com lojas e cafés mas o que chama a atenção é a arquitectura dos edificios que a rodeiam e as pequenas ruas que por ela se cruzam que nos levam a sentir que estamos a descobrir cantos em Veneza que mais ninguém conhece.

Because of its strategic location on the Adriatic Sea, Venice thrived as one of the most important centers of international trade and today it's daily life it revolves around it. The Strada Nova is a lively street with shops and cafes but what is striking is the architecture of the buildings that surround it and the small streets that intersect it that led us to feel that we are finding corners in Venice that nobody else knows.

do: RIVA DEGLI SCHIAVONI - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

A Riva Degli Schiavoni é um passeio que acompanha o Grand Canal no bairro de San Marco com vista para Dorsoduro e para a ilha de S. Giorgio Maggiore, começa junto ao Palazzo Ducale e termina antes do Arsenale. Durante esse trajecto encontramos um grande número de hotéis alguns dos quais instalados em antigos Palazzos ricos em história, restaurantes e monumentos de interesse como Santa Maria della Pietà. 

The Riva Degli Schiavoni is a tour that accompanies the Grand Canal at San Marco neighborhood overlooking Dorsoduro and the island of S. Giorgio Maggiore, near the Palazzo Ducale begins and ends before the Arsenale. During this journey we found a large number of hotels some of which are installed in old Palazzos rich in history, restaurants and monuments of interest as Santa Maria della Pietà.

Castello foi um dos nossos "sestiere" preferidos, não sendo o mais monumental de Veneza (San Marco leva o prémio só pela sua praça) foi dos que mais nos levou a como será um dia normal na cidade dos canais. Foi onde encontrámos um pouco de silêncio, onde percorremos as suas ruas estreitas sem ver ninguém até chegarmos a esta grande praça que conta com três monumentos importantes. 

Castello was one of our favourite "sestiere", not being the most monumental of Venice (San Marco takes the prize only for its square) it was the one that took us to a normal day in the city of the canals. It was where we found a little bit of silence, where we go through its narrow streets without seeing anyone until we get this big square that has three important monuments.

do: TRAGHETTO ST. MARIA DEL GIGLIO - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Acho que experimentámos quase todos os meios de transporte que se pode utilizar em Veneza, primeiro foi o vaporetto que nos permitiu atravessar o Grand Canal e ter o primeiro contacto com a cidade, tanto de dia como de noite. Na altura custou 6,5€, depois decidimos que não podíamos perder a experiência de andar numa gôndola. Por último andámos no Traghetto, nem estava no nossos planos depois de ter utilizado os outros dois meios mas enquanto caminhávamos pelo Dorsoduro decidimos cruzar para o lado de San Marco.

I've experienced almost all means of transport that can be used in Venice, first it was the vaporetto (steamboat) that allowed us to cross the Grand Canal and have the first contact with the city, both day and night. At the time it cost 6,5€, then we decided we could not miss the experience of riding a gondola. Finally we crossed the Canal in a Traghetto, was not even in our plans after using the other two but as we walked by Dorsoduro we decided to cross to the side of San Marco.

eat: LE PARIGINE - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Passeávamos pela Via dei Servi a ver montras, a contemplar a cúpula do Duomo quando encontrámos esta pequena gelataria: Le Parigine. Famosa pela sua especialidade de bolacha de gelado com as suas wafers estaladiças que segundo dizem veio antes que o gelado em cone. Não provei essa sua especialidade fui pelo formato mais tradicional com o cone mas adorámos a qualidade e a textura do gelado.

 

We were walking down Via dei Servi doing some window shopping, contemplating the Duomo when we found this little ice cream shop: Le Parigine. Famous for its specialty ice cream sándwich with their crispy wafers which they say came before the ice cream cone. I did not tasted their specialty I went for a more traditional format with the cone but we loved the quality and texture of ice cream.

eat: TRATTORIA ZÁ-ZÁ - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

A Trattoria Zá-Zá está ao lado de um outro restaurante que nos tinha sido recomendado (Trattoria Mario) mas estava cheio, foi o destino e no final acreditamos que fizémos uma boa escolha. Tinha á partida um ponto a favor: a sua pitoresca esplanada, com mesas de madeira tosca e cadeiras de madeira coloridas.

 

The Trattoria Za-Zá is standing next to another restaurant that had been recommended (Trattoria Mario) to us but it was full, it was our destiny and in the end we believe we made a good choice. It had from the start a point in favor: its picturesque terrace with rough wooden tables and colorful wooden chairs.

do: PRAÇA DA REPÚBLICA - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

No nosso primeiro dia em Florença saímos do hotel á procura dos monumentos icónicos da cidade: Ponte Vecchio e o Duomo. A beleza da cidade está na sua riqueza arquitectónica que se conservou ao longo de séculos e quando chegámos á Praça da República não deixei de sentir que algo ali não somava ao tudo o que tínhamos visto antes. Esta é uma zona mais moderna sem a opulência de outros pontos de interesse mas não deixa de transmitir a riqueza da cidade através dos elegantes edificios que a rodeiam.

 

On our first day in Florence we left the hotel looking for the iconic monuments of the city: Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo. The beauty of the city lies in its architectural wealth that has been preserved for centuries and when we reached the Square of the Republic I couldn't help feleling that something there didn't add up to what we had seen before. This is a more modern area without the opulence from other interesting places but it does not stop to convey the wealth of the city through the elegant buildings that surround it.

Uma boa parte da grande história e riqueza de Florença está ligada ao comércio e a própria cidade é um centro comercial ao ar livre com uma oferta variada do barato ao luxuoso, do  artesanal ao industrial. A Via degli Strozzi é onde podemos encontrar as lojas de luxo de marcas como Bulgari, Cartier, Gucci, Zadig & Voltaire para além de algumas marcas locais.

 

A good part of the great history and wealth of Florence is linked to trade and the city itself is an outdoor shopping center with a range of inexpensive to luxurious, from artisanal to the industrial. Via degli Strozzi is where we can find the luxury shops of brands such as Bulgari, Cartier, Gucci, Zadig & Voltaire in addition to some local brands.

do: JARDIM BARDINI - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

É difícil comparar o jardim Bardini ao Boboli, eu gostei dos dois mas são diferentes. O Bardini é mais pequeno, íntimo e tem uma das melhores vistas sobre Florença. Descemos a Costa de San Girogio para aqui chegar e não sabíamos muito bem o que íamos encontrar. O primeiro que vemos é o pequeno palácio propriedade de um coleccionador de arte, Stefano Bardini que no inicio do século XX o adquiriu e reabilitou. A sua coleção é o tema da exposição do Museu Bardini.

 

It is difficult to compare the Bardini Garden with the Boboli, I liked both but they are different. The Bardini is smaller, intimate and has one of the best views of Florence. We went down the coast from San Girogio to get here and we did not know very well what we would find. The first we see is the small palace owned by an art collector Stefano Bardini that early in the twentieth century acquired and rehabilitated it's. It's art collection is the theme of the exhibition of the Bardini Museum.

eat: CANTINA DEL GELATO - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Será muito mau só pensar em pizzas e gelados quando vou a Itália? Será redutor? Acredito que sim. Mas não consigo meter o pé nestas terras sem comer um ou dois gelados todos os días, de preferencia em sitios diferentes para novas experiências de sabores. A Cantina del Gelato estava na minha lista mas não sabia muito bem onde era e ao descer dos jardins Bardini quis o destino que nos encontrássemos.

 

Is it very bad that I only think of pizza and ice cream when I go to Italy? Does it ? I believe so. But I can not get a foot in these lands without eating one or two ice cream a day, preferably in different places to experience new flavors. The Cantina del Gelato was in my list but was not sure where it was and coming down from the Bardini Gardens fate wanted us to meet.

eat: BORGO ANTICO - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Se uma coisa se pode dizer de Florença é que é preciso ter muito azar e escolher muito mal para não comer bem. Salvo alguma excepção (e nem muito grave) comemos sempre bem e a ajudar a esta afirmação está o Borgo Antico.  Para escapar um pouco ás nossas ruas habituais de Florença decidimos passar para o outro lado do Arno e entrar no bairro de Oltrano, um dos mais "hipster" da cidade.

 

If one thing can be said about Florence is that you must be very unlucky and choose poorly to not eat well. Barring some exception (and not very serious) we always ate well and to help this assertion is the Borgo Antico. To escape a bit from our usual streets of Florence we decided to move to the other side of the Arno and enter the Oltrarno district, one of the most "hipster" of the city.

sleep: NH ANGLO AMERICAN - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Não foi fácil a nossa escolha de hotel em Florença, queríamos ficar perto dos monumentos mas não queríamos uma zona demasiado agitada, íamos com um bébé por isso o tamanho do quarto era importante e acabámos por escolher o NH Anglo American junto ao Consulado dos Estados Unidos, um pouco mais longe do epicentro turístico mas num bairro que gostei muito pelas suas lojas e restaurantes. Foi para nós uma boa escolha.

 

It was not easy choosing our hotel in Florence, we wanted to stay close to the monuments but we didn't want a busy area, we went with a baby so the room size was important and ended up choosing the NH Anglo American near the U.S. Consulate, a little further away from the tourist epicenter but in a neighborhood that we enjoyed for its shops and restaurants. It was a good choice for us.

do: JARDIM DE BOBOLI - FLORENÇA, ITÁLIA

Não pudémos visitar o interior do Palácio Pitti mas não podíamos deixar de visitar o seu fantástico jardim de proporções generosas e que em alguns pontos oferecem uma excelente vista sobre Florença. A familia Medici foi a responsável pela ampliação do Palácio no século XIV assim como da construção do jardim que podemos hoje contemplar. As entradas custam 10€ e dão acesso para além deste Jardim, a três museus (um deles o da Porcelana) e ao Jardim de Bardini que valem a pena a visita.

 

We could not visit the inside of the Pitti Palace but we could not miss your fantastic garden of generous proportions and in some places offer a great view of Florence. The Medici family was responsible for the expansion of the palace in the fourteenth century and the building of the garden that we admire today. Tickets are 10€ and provide access beyond this garden, the three museums (one of Porcelain) and the Bardini Gardens that are worth the visit.

do: GALERIA VITTORIO EMANUELE II - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

As lojas de luxo certificam que as Galerias continuam a ser um dos lugares mais privilegiados da cidade para fazer compras, uma pena eu não ter uma carteira para acompanhar mas é verdade que um simples passeio por elas já me faz viajar no tempo e imaginar que estou no final do século XIX sentada na esplanada do Café Biffi a beber um chá depois de uma tarde de compras.

Foi inaugurada a 1867 mas a obra não estava completa, apenas dez anos mais tarde terminou com a trágica morte do seu criador Giuseppe Mengoni que terá caído do topo do arco triunfal.

Luxury shopping make sure that the Galleries remains one of the most priviledged places in the city for shopping, a pity I do not have a wallet to keep up with it but it is true that a simple walk through them makes me travel back in time and imagine that I am in the late nineteenth century sitting on the terrace of the Café Biffi drinking a tea after an afternoon of shopping.
It was inaugurated in 1867 but the work was not complete, only ten years later ended with the tragic death of its creator Giuseppe Mengoni that fell from the top of the triumphal arch.

eat: PIZZERIA DI GENNARO - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

 

Milão deve ter mil restaurantes que dizem ter a melhor pizza da cidade, o Di Gennaro talvez seja um deles e o melhor de o termos conhecido nem foi a comida, foi que não estava no plano e foi toda uma descoberta...para nós! Para mim é uma pizzería á italiana, o "sr. Gennaro" recebe-te á porta sempre com muita pressa mas sem perder um pingo de simpatía, quando vê o bébé acelera o passo para que nos sentemos o quanto antes, ainda nem provámos as pizzas e já nem queremos saber se são as melhores, o Di Gennaro conquista pela simpatía e por aquele toque típico italiano (sem as toalhas de xadrez) que parece que só vês nos filmes mas que afinal existe.

 

Milan must have a thousand restaurants that say they have the best pizza in town, Di Gennaro is perhaps one of them but the best of eating here was not even tasting the food it was that it was not in the plan and all was ... a discovery for us! To me it is a true Italian pizzería, the "Mr. Gennaro" meets you at the door in a hurry but always without losing an ounce of sympathy when he sees the baby he accelerates the pace to sit us as soon as possible, we hadn't tasted the pizzas and do not even know if they are the best, Di Gennaro conquered us by it's sympathy and by that typical Italian touch (no towels chess) it seems that you only see it in movies but it actually exists.

do: STAZIONE CENTRALE - MILÃO, ITÁLIA

Foi o segundo sitio que conhecemos de Milão porque o primeiro foi o aeroporto. Daqui partimos para Florença directamente mas enquanto esperávamos pelo comboio passeámos pela bela estação. Não é daqueles sitios que vem recomendado nos guias mas é sem dúvida um dos mais importantes da cidade pela sua função. Também a sua história é interessante, a primeira pedra foi colocada por Victor Emanuele III (em 1906) mas a sua construção terminou apenas a 1931 após ter sido interrompida pela Guerra Mundial.

It was the second place we visited in Milan because first it was the airport. From here we went to Florence directly but as we waited for the train we strolled through the beautiful train station. It is no one of those sites that come recommended in the guides but it is undoubtedly one of the city's most important for its function. Also it's story is interesting, the first stone was laid by Victor Emanuele III (in 1906) but its construction ended only in 1931 after having been interrupted by the World War.
