Pela sua localização estratégica no Mar Adriático, Veneza prosperou por ser um dos mais importantes centros do comércio internacional e ainda hoje o seu dia á dia gira á sua volta. A Strada Nova é uma animada rua com lojas e cafés mas o que chama a atenção é a arquitectura dos edificios que a rodeiam e as pequenas ruas que por ela se cruzam que nos levam a sentir que estamos a descobrir cantos em Veneza que mais ninguém conhece.

Because of its strategic location on the Adriatic Sea, Venice thrived as one of the most important centers of international trade and today it's daily life it revolves around it. The Strada Nova is a lively street with shops and cafes but what is striking is the architecture of the buildings that surround it and the small streets that intersect it that led us to feel that we are finding corners in Venice that nobody else knows.

A Riva Degli Schiavoni é um passeio que acompanha o Grand Canal no bairro de San Marco com vista para Dorsoduro e para a ilha de S. Giorgio Maggiore, começa junto ao Palazzo Ducale e termina antes do Arsenale. Durante esse trajecto encontramos um grande número de hotéis alguns dos quais instalados em antigos Palazzos ricos em história, restaurantes e monumentos de interesse como Santa Maria della Pietà. 

The Riva Degli Schiavoni is a tour that accompanies the Grand Canal at San Marco neighborhood overlooking Dorsoduro and the island of S. Giorgio Maggiore, near the Palazzo Ducale begins and ends before the Arsenale. During this journey we found a large number of hotels some of which are installed in old Palazzos rich in history, restaurants and monuments of interest as Santa Maria della Pietà.

Castello foi um dos nossos "sestiere" preferidos, não sendo o mais monumental de Veneza (San Marco leva o prémio só pela sua praça) foi dos que mais nos levou a como será um dia normal na cidade dos canais. Foi onde encontrámos um pouco de silêncio, onde percorremos as suas ruas estreitas sem ver ninguém até chegarmos a esta grande praça que conta com três monumentos importantes. 

Castello was one of our favourite "sestiere", not being the most monumental of Venice (San Marco takes the prize only for its square) it was the one that took us to a normal day in the city of the canals. It was where we found a little bit of silence, where we go through its narrow streets without seeing anyone until we get this big square that has three important monuments.

do: TRAGHETTO ST. MARIA DEL GIGLIO - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Acho que experimentámos quase todos os meios de transporte que se pode utilizar em Veneza, primeiro foi o vaporetto que nos permitiu atravessar o Grand Canal e ter o primeiro contacto com a cidade, tanto de dia como de noite. Na altura custou 6,5€, depois decidimos que não podíamos perder a experiência de andar numa gôndola. Por último andámos no Traghetto, nem estava no nossos planos depois de ter utilizado os outros dois meios mas enquanto caminhávamos pelo Dorsoduro decidimos cruzar para o lado de San Marco.

I've experienced almost all means of transport that can be used in Venice, first it was the vaporetto (steamboat) that allowed us to cross the Grand Canal and have the first contact with the city, both day and night. At the time it cost 6,5€, then we decided we could not miss the experience of riding a gondola. Finally we crossed the Canal in a Traghetto, was not even in our plans after using the other two but as we walked by Dorsoduro we decided to cross to the side of San Marco.

No guia Lonely Planet de Veneza há um Top 10 de coisas para ver (ou fazer) e a oitava é a Punta Della Dogana. E é só até visitares Veneza que entendes bem porquê, até lá ficas com a ideia que há muito mais coisas interessantes que ver que a zona da antiga alfândega da cidade. Este pequeno triângulo que assiste ao encontro de dois canais: o Grand e o Giudecca tornou-se num dos centros culturais e artísticos mais interessantes.

In the Lonely Planet guide of Venice there is a Top 10 things to see (or do) and the eighth is the Punta Della Dogana. And it's only until you visit Venice you understand why, you stay up there with the idea that there are many more interesting things to see that the area of ​​the ancient customs of the city. This small triangle is the place where two channels meet: the Grand and Giudecca became one of the most interesting art and cultural centers.

sleep: BEST WESTERN BOLOGNA HOTEL - MESTRE, ITÁLIA

Sempre que falamos da nossa viagem a Veneza perguntam-me porque não escolhi um hotel na cidade, para nós foi muito simples escolher o Best Western Bologna em Mestre, estava ao pé da estação (era só atravessar a estrada) o que nos permitiu deslocar até Veneza (creio que os bilhetes eram 1€ por viagem), Verona, Pádua e Bolonha sem problemas.

 

Whenever we talk about our trip to Venice people ask me why I didn't choose a hotel in the city, it was very simple for us to choose the Best Western Bologna in Mestre, it was very close to the station (it was just across the road) which allowed us to move to Venice (I believe the tickets were € 1 per trip), Verona, Padua and Bologna smoothly.

Fazendo um apanhado das imagens mais emblemáticas que vi de Veneza antes de a visitar, podemos sempre ver as gôndolas, a Piazza di São Marco com a Basilica, várias do Grand Canal e claro, a Ponte de Rialto. Esta ponte em forma de arco é uma das mais antigas e também um dos símbolos de Veneza.

Pareceu-me que ela é a grande embaixadora da essência do passado (e presente) mercantil da cidade, porque não servia apenas de passagem ou para ligar dois bairros da cidade, ao passar por ela entramos num pequeno centro comercial com lojas de um lado e do outro.

 

If I think about the most notorious images I saw of Venice before visiting you could always see the gondolas, the St. Mark's square and the Basilica, lots of pictures of the Grand Canal and of course, the Rialto Bridge. With arch shape it is one of the oldest of this city and also one of it's icons.

It looked to me as she represented the essence of the merchant past (and present) of the city, it wasn't just used to connect the two sides of the Grand Canal, passing through it we get in a small shopping centre with stores on both sides.

eat: CAFÉ DERSUT - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

A caminho da estação de comboios de Veneza, já em jeito de despedida decidimos parar para comer algo no Café Dersut.

Localizado no Campo dei Frari, o Dersut é uma marca de café que tem lojas onde para nós nem era o mais importante. Na realidade a primeira coisa que chama a atenção é o seu mini-mercado de fruta fresca exposta. Precisávamos de carregar baterias e pedimos um "centrifughe" de laranja e cenoura, que vimos serem cortadas na hora. 

 

On our way to the train station of Venice, in a farewell mood we decided to stop for something to eat at Café Dersut.
Located in the Campo dei Frari, the Dersut is a coffee Brand that has shops where for us it was not even the most important (the coffee). In fact the first thing that attracts attention its mini fresh fruit market. We needed to charge batteries and asked for a "centrifughe" of carrot and orange, which we saw being cut in that exact moment.

Localizada na Piazza San Marco é sem dúvida a sua principal atracção. Esta impressionante basílica bizantina é um símbolo da prosperidade e riqueza de Veneza.

A sua fachada é bastante elaborada com cúpulas, colunas, arcos, paredes e estátuas em mármore, passando pelos maravilhosos mosaicos que abordam vários temas, como a história de San Marco, histórias do Velho e do Novo testamento ou representam a própria basílica.

Located in Piazza San Marco is undoubtedly it's main attraction. This impressive Byzantine basilica is a symbol of prosperity and wealth of Venice.
Its facade is quite elaborate with the domess, columns, arches, walls and marble statues, passing through the beautiful mosaics that cover various topics like the history of San Marco, stories of the Old and New Testament or that represent the basilica itself.

É a principal atracção turística de Veneza por isso tentar tirar fotos sem ter uma multidão pela frente, só ás primeiras horas do dia! Como estávamos em Mestre essas preciosas primeiras horas eram passadas a apanhar o comboio para entrar na cidade.

Há duas maneiras de chegar á Piazza, de barco ou a pé. No primeiro dia que chegámos apanhámos um vaporetto, hoje fomos a pé.

Devo admitir que gostei mais de chegar pela segunda opção, primeiro pelo passeio e depois porque pelo lado onde entramos temos uma melhor ideia da dimensão da praça e logo ao fundo vemos a Basílica de San Marco e o Campanile.

It is the main tourist attraction of Venice so try to take pictures without having a crowd ahead, only at early hours of the day! As we were in Mestre those precious first hours were spent to take the train into the city.
There are two ways to reach the Piazza, by boat or on foot. On the first day we arrived we took a vaporetto, today we walked.
I must admit that I liked the second option more, first because the stroll and then because weenter on a side where we have a better idea of ​​the size of the square and to the bottom rightwe see the Basilica of San Marco and the Campanile.

Para ter uma visão 360º de Veneza nada melhor que o Campanile di San Marco junto á Basílica. A entrada custa 6€ e a viagem no elevador não é longa mas é apertadinha. Tem 98,5 metros de altura e foi construído no inicio do século XX, no mesmo local onde o anterior se colapsou.

A sua vista sobre Veneza é impressionante, só dele podemos entender a dimensão de basílica ou da própria Piazza di San Marco.

 

To have a 360 degree view of Venice nothing better than the Campanile di San Marco near the Basilica. Entry costs 6€ and the trip in the elevator is not long but it's tight. Has 98.5 meters high and was built in the early twentieth century, the same place where the former is collapsed.

eat: TRATTORIA DA MAMO - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Na primeira noite em Veneza queríamos jantar numa "trattoria", daquelas escondidas nas ruelas menos populadas. Passámos por algumas e não sei o que nos dava para não nos sentarmos em nenhuma. Pensámos em ir até Rialto e escolher um por lá.

A caminho e quando estávamos a chegar ao Campo San Bartolomeo, o marido enfia-se numa ruela obscura e voltando diz-me: "Anda encontrei um restaurante que és capaz de gostar."

 

On the first night in Venice we wanted to have dinner in a "trattoria", those hidden in the alleys less crowded. We passed some and I do not know what got into us that we could not sit in on any. We thought about going to Rialto and pick one up there.
On it's way and when we were arriving at Campo San Bartolomeo, my husband slips into a dark alley and comes back tellsing me: "Let's go I found a restaurant that you might enjoy."

do: GRAND CANAL DE NOITE - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Começámos a nossa visita a Veneza com uma viagem de vaporetto pelo Grand Canal e terminámos o dia da mesma maneira.

Para descansar regressámos ao nosso hotel, mudámos de roupa e voltámos a Veneza. Na estação de Mestre apanhámos o comboio e a seguir voltámos a apanhar o vaporetto, ainda pensámos a ir a pé mas depois pareceu-nos que seria mais interesante percorrer o Grand Canal de noite, ainda para mais com o preço simpático de 6,5€ por pessoa.

We started our visit to Venice with in Grand Canal by vaporetto and ended the day the same way.
To rest we returned to our hotel, we changed our clothes and we returned to Venice. In the Mestre station we caught the train and then we again took the vaporetto, although we thought about walking but then it seem more interesting for us to travel the Grand Canal at night, even more so with the friendly price of 6.5 € per person.

do: CASTELLO - VENEZA, ITÁLIA

Uma coisa é certa, é fácil perdermo-nos aqui por entre ruas, ruelas, pontes e canais, no entanto pouco ou nada utilizámos o mapa e acabámos por ir na direcção certeza. Tínhamos um mapa do hotel que era bastante bom, as principais artérias terrestres estavam assinaladas a amarelo. Entrámos na zona do Castello e almoçamos numa tasquita no Campo Bandiera e Moro, tinha alguns turistas mas estávamos longe da confusão que vimos anteriormente.

One thing is certain, it is easy to get lost here through streets, alleys, bridges and canals, but we used the map little or nothing  and we ended up going in the right direction. We had a map of the hotel which was quite good, the main arteries were highlighted in yellow. We entered the Castello area and had lunch in a tasquita Campo Bandiera and Moro, but we had some tourists away from the confusion that we saw earlier.

Andávamos nós pela Sestiere Cannaregio quando vimos um zona de gôndolas junto ao Grand Canal. Durante a nossa visita de Veneza sempre dissémos que dispensávamos o passeio de gôndola, mas a curiosidade foi mais forte e lá decidimos aventurar-nos.

 

We were walking by the Sestiere Cannaregio when we saw an area with gondolas in the Grand Canal. During our visit to Venice we always said that we didn't needed to make the gondola ride, but we were so curious that we decided to have a go at it.

Hoje conhecemos Veneza numa viagem de Vaporetto pelo Grand Canal.

A estação de comboios fica de frente para o Grand Canal e bem perto estão as paragens de vaporettos uma forma de transporte mais em conta, se bem que ainda há mais baratos, por apenas 0,5€ podemos viajar num traghetto mas só vai de uma margem a outra, não atravessa o canal. Os vaporettos custam 6,5€ o bilhete, não parece barato, mas levam-nos da estação até á Piazza di San Marco num passeio que eu considero bastante turístico, principalmente se vens na zona sem cobertura onde podes disfrutar de toda a paisagem. 
 

Today we have discovered Venice in a vaporetto trip through the Grand Canal.

The train station is just across the Grand Canal and close are the vaporetti stops a form of transportation not so expensive, although there are still cheaper by only 0.5 € a traghetto that goes into one border to the other it does not cross the canal.
The vaporetti ticket costs 6,5€ , it might not seem cheap, but it took us from the station until to Piazza di San Marco a ride that I consider quite tourist, specially if you are in a open área where you can enjoy the scenery.
