THE BURGER LOBBY - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Já são doze os restaurantes que existem de esta cadeia que promete hambuguers gourmet e a sua carta contém algumas receitas especiais como a que provei onde se destacam o Pedro Ximenez Burger, a Japo Burger, a Red Curry e a Tartufo mas para os que gostam das tradicionais aqui também as encontra. O espaço procura recriar um ambiente nova-iorquino copiando talvez o Shake Shack e é verdade que resulta bastante agradável.

 

There are now twelve restaurants that exist from this chain that promises gourmet hambuguers and it's menu contains some special recipes like the one I tasted with highlights like the Pedro Ximenez Burger, a Japo burger, Red Curry and the Tartufo but for those who like the traditional you can also find them here. Space seeks to recreate a New York environment copying perhaps the Shake Shack and it is true that results pretty nice.

EL OCHENTA - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Este fim de semana repetimos um restaurante recomendado por alguns colegas de trabalho que vivem em Majadahonda, é um espaço diferente mais cosmopolita que se soma a uma nova oferta que está a nascer na zona ao qual juntaria o Xinito e a Central Mexicana. Está muito bem localizado junto ao parque do Monte del Pilar e tem uma "terraza" que no Verão estará sempre cheia.

 

This weekend we repeated a recommended restaurant by some co-workers who live in Majadahonda, it's a different space with a Cosmopolitan touch that adds to a new offer that is emerging in the area to which the Xinito and the Mexican Central are also in. Is very well located near the Monte del Pilar park and has a "terrace" in the summer that might be always full. 

XINITO - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Há algum tempo que tínhamos deixado as descobertas culinárias na zona onde vivemos, preferimos ir até Madrid, comida e um passeio é um bom plano para "desligar" no fim de semana. Mas voltámos a Majadahonda porque há alguns restaurantes que estão a da que falar, um é o Ochenta e o outro é este Xinito ambos junto ao Monte del Pilar excelente para passeios em familia. O Xinito parecia ter nome de asiático barato mas ao entrar chegamos a um restaurante moderno, com uma decoração simples se não contamos com um dragão gigante pendurado no tecto.

 

For some time we had left the culinary discoveries in the area where we live, we prefer to go to Madrid, food and a nice walk is a good plan to "turn off" in the weekend. But we returned to Majadahonda because there are some restaurants that are in everyone's mouth, one is the Ochenta and the other is this one, Xinito both near the Monte del Pilar excellent for walks in family. The Xinito seemed to have a name of a cheap asian but on entering we come to a modern restaurant with a simple decoration except for the giant dragon hanging from the ceiling.

Terminaram este fim de semana que passou as Fiestas Patronales de Majadahonda, conseguimos ainda ir a uma parte mas fica para 2015 a vontade de conhecer mais a fundo estas festas do nosso "pueblo" que juntam eventos religiosos, culturais e desportivos, uma feira medieval no centro, concertos com conhecidos artistas espanhóis (desconhecidos para nós) e esta zona de animação tipo Feira Popular que instalam no Recinto Ferial que foi o que visitámos no Sábado.

 

Ended this past weekendthe Fiestas Patronales Majadahonda, we were still able to go to one part but for 2015 there is the wish to discover more deeply these feasts of our "pueblo" that combine religious, cultural and sporting events, a medieval fair in the center, concerts with renowned Spanish artists (unknown to us) and this animation area like a Fun Fair that was installed in the Recinto Ferial that we visited on Saturday.

eat: TABERNA DEL VOLAPIÉ - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Fomos á Taberna del Volapié a um Sábado depois das compras no mercado, a sua esplanada convida a sentar e a sua carta repleta de petiscos enche as suas mesas de gente que não quer só beber uma cerveja. Chamou-me a atenção a sua colorida fachada a relembrar as antigas tabernas e pensava que era um conceito original mas é na realidade uma cadeia de restaurantes da Andaluzia que felizmente decidiram abrir uma em Majadahonda.

 

We went to Taberna del Volapié a Saturday after shopping at the market, its terrace invites to sit and their menú complete with good snacking options fills its tables of people who not only want to drink a beer. Called my attention because of it's colorful facade that recalls the old taverns and thought it was an original concept but is actually a chain of restaurants from Andalucía that thankfully decided to open one in Majadahonda.

shop: HORNO SANTA MÓNICA - MAJADAHONDA, MADRID

Há algum tempo que não fazia o tradicional programa dos habitantes de Majadahonda nas manhãs de Sábado: ir ao mercado (ver aqui). É sempre uma boa experiencia a pesar da multidão porque para além de comprar fruta e verduras de boa qualidade, acabas por conhecer pessoas enquanto esperas que te atendam e foi de esta forma tão ao acaso que conhecemos o Horno Santa Mónica quando perguntámos a uma senhora onde tinha comprado o pão que levava.

 

It has been a long time since I did the traditional Majadahonda locals program on Saturday mornings: go to the market (see here). It's always a good experience despite the crowds because apart from buying fruit and vegetables of good quality, you end up meeting people while waiting to and this was how we randomly discovered the Horno Santa Monica when we asked a lady where she had bought the bread she was carrying.

eat: WRIASKO - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Um dos motivos pelos quais escolhemos Majadahonda para viver foi na altura nos terem dito que tinha bastante "vida" e que teria suficiente animação para não sentir que tinha que ir a Madrid sempre que quisesse ver gente. Quase a fazer quatro anos aqui continua surpreender-nos principalmente pela qualidade de algumas das suas ofertas gastronómicas e o Wriasko é uma excelente exemplo.

 

One of the reasons we chose Majadahonda to live was that at the time friends told us it had enough "life" and enough animation to make you feel we didn't had to go to Madrid whenever we wanted to see people. Almost four years living here and it still amazes us mainly by the quality of its culinary offerings and Wriasko is an excellent example of it.

eat: TONY ROMA'S - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

O primeiro Tony Roma's abriu em Miami em 1972, um restaurante com uma decoração simples mas com boa comida cuja especialidade é o entrecosto com o seu saboroso molho de barbecue. Já tinha visto vários por Madrid e quando vi um em Majadahonda decidimos ir experimentar.

Ao entrar vimos que o restaurante era bastante grande e estava vazio, por alguns momentos pensámos que talvez fosse porque não seria muito bom mas em poucos minutos encheu de familias desejosas por comer o famoso entrecosto e os seus hamburguers.

 

The first Tony Roma's opened in Miami in 1972, a restaurant with simple decor but with good food whose specialty is ribs with a tasty barbecue sauce. I had seen several of Madrid and when I saw one in Majadahonda we decided to go try it.
Upon entering we saw that the restaurant was quite large and empty, for a few moments we thought maybe it was because it would be because it was not very good but in a few minutes it filled with families eager to eat the ribs and their famous burgers.

eat: GINOS - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Quando decidi escrever este blog quería fazer primeiro para partilhar e registrar as minhas experiências e depois recomendar ajudando a quem visita os mesmos lugares a terem algumas referências porque é a forma como eu pesquiso na WWW. Creio que o Ginos é um bom exemplo de um post que quero que fique como registro de um restaurante mas não será um sitio que recomendó a quem visita Madrid porque afinal quem o faz procura algo mais genuíno. Ginos pertence a uma grande cadeia de restaurantes que se chama VIPS, a sua principal vantagem é que escolhes os teus prato favoritos e voltas porque têm sempre o mesmo sabor, a sua qualidade (não sendo espectacular) difícilmente muda.

 

When I decided to write this blog I first wanted to share and record my experiences and then help by recommending to anyone visiting the same places to have some references because it's how I search the WWW. I believe Ginos is a good example of a post that I want to record a restaurant but not exactly recommend it to anyone visiting Madrid because after all one does demand something more genuine. Ginos belongs to a large chain of restaurants called VIPS, its main advantage is that you have your favorite dish and always comeback because they keep the same taste, the quality (not being spectacular) hardly changes.

do: GRAN VÍA - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Esta rua pedonal é das mais movimentadas de Majadahonda principalmente aos Sábados pela manhã, durante ou depois do mercado que fica ali perto onde se pode comprar fruta, legumes e roupa. Depois há uma autêntica romaria pela Gran Vía, se o tempo está bom as esplanadas de esta rua enchem com familias a tomar uma "caña" ou um vermut enquanto lhes servem uma tapa e vão vigilando as crianças que por ali brincam sem grandes preocupações.

eat: TANTEO - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Mais um sitio para ir de "tapas" aqui no bairro. Chama-se Tanteo e fica junto á Gran Via de Majadahonda. A sua esplanada chama a atenção e mais agora no Verão que sabe bem estar ali sentado a tomar uma "caña" e a comer umas tapas.

Fomos á hora do almoço e a um Domingo, além disso fomos relativamente cedo (antes das 14h) e estava quase vazio. 

 

Another place to have "tapas" in the neighborhood. It's called Tanteo and is near the Gran Via in Majadahonda. Its terrace attracts attention and more so now that in the summer it feels great to drink a a "caña" and tapas.

We went at lunch hour on a Sunday, also it was relatively early (before 14h) and almost empty.

eat: PEGGY SUE - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Não é a primeira vez que jantamos num Peggy Sue mas é a primeira que comemos neste em Majadahonda, perto do nosso "bairro" tanto que até fomos a pé. Demorámos uns vinte minutos (não é assim tão perto eu sei) a chegar mas íamos com um apetite feroz.

Algumas coisas mudaram no Peggy Sue desde a nossa primeira visita em Madrid (ler aquí), a Peggy está um pouco mais moderna mas o conceito e o interior dos restaurantes continua fiel aos dinners dos anos 50.

 

It is not the first time we dined in Peggy Sue but is the first to eat in this one in Majadahonda near our "neighborhood" so close that we walked there. It took us about twenty minutes (it's not that close I know)  to get there but we arrived with a ferocious appetite.
Some things have changed in Peggy Sue since our first visit in Madrid (read here), Peggy is a bit more modern but the concept and the interior of the restaurant still remains faithful to the '50s dinner.

eat: CAPITOLINA - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Em retrospectiva fomos a mais restaurantes italianos ou pizzarias em Majadahonda que a qualquer outro tipo, não ajuda o facto de termos ido a dois em pouco menos que uma semana. Primeiro o Rigatoni e agora o Capitolina, um que dizem os locais que é de "toda la vida". Muitos são habituais, vêm pela comida que mantém a qualidade de sempre e pelo tratamento que recebem, nós não pertencendo a esse grupo fomos igualmente bem recebidos.

Entre ficar dentro ou fora, preferimos aproveitar um dos primeiros verdadeiros días de Primavera para comer ao ar livre na sua agradável esplanada que encheu num abrir e fechar de olhos. 

In retrospect we went to more Italian restaurants and pizzerias in Majadahonda than any other kind, does not help the fact that we have gone to two in a little less than a week. First the Rigatoni and now the Capitoline, one that the locals say it is "de toda la vida". Many are usual customers, they come for the food that always keeps the same quality and the treatment they receive, although we didn't belong to this group were equally well received.
Between being inside or outside, we prefer to enjoy one of the first real days of spring to eat outdoors in its pleasant terrace that filled in the twinkling of an eye.

eat: RIGATONI - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

No Dia da Mãe a familia (todos menos o gato) levou-me a almoçar ao Rigatoni. Já conhecíamos um restaurante italiano do grupo, o Pulcinella que está no centro de Madrid e que gostámos porque nos pareceu ser do mais autêntico que pode haver principalmente quando és atendido por italianos.

Este fica mais perto de casa e decidimos experimentar, se é igual ao seu "irmão" de Madrid perdemos menos tempo a ir a um bom italiano. Problema? Domingo e Dia da Mãe, estava cheio mas mesmo assim conseguimos mesa nesta esplanada lateral.

 

On Mother's Day the family (all except the cat) took me to lunch at Rigatoni. We already knew a restaurant from this Italian group, the Pulcinella at the center of Madrid and we liked because it seemed to be the most authentic that it can be especially when you the waiters are Italians.
This one is closer to home and we decided to try, if it is equal to its "brother" of Madrid we lose less time to go to a good Italian. Problem? Sunday and Mother's Day it was full but still managed to table in this side terrace.

do: PARQUE COLÓN - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Majadahonda ou como lhe chamam por aquí "Manhattan", tem um bom conjunto de espaços verdes e de lazer que faz com que seja um dos sitios ideais (fora do centro de Madrid) para viver com crianças. O Parque Colón não é um dos maiores mas tem uma zona polidesportiva onde podes ver jogar futebol ou basket ("baloncesto" como dizem por aqui), tem espaços verdes para deitar ao sol a ler um livro, um parque infantil, etc..

 

Majadahonda or as they call it around here "Manhattan", has a good set of green spaces and leisure that makes it one of the ideal places (outside the center of Madrid) to live with children. The Parque Colón is not one of the largest but has a multi-sports area where you can see them play football or basketball ("baloncesto" as they say here), has green spaces to lay down soaking up the sun while reading a book, a children's playground, etc..

eat: TABERNA EL RETOQUE - MAJADAHONDA, ESPANHA

Finalmente um fim de semana com bom tempo permitiu-nos sair para dar um passeio e comer numa esplanada. Escolhemos a Taberna El Retoque que fica junto ao Parque Colón e á Gran Via em Majadahonda. Na realidade estava bastante frio fora ainda assim decidimos "insistir" na esperança que o sol chegasse á nossa mesa.

 

Finally a weekend with good weather allowed us to go for a walk and eat on a terrace. We chose Taberna El Retoque which is next to Parque Colón and Gran Via in Majadahonda. In fact it was quite cold outside yet we "insisted" in the hope that the sun would come to our table.

shop: MERCADO DE MAJADAHONDA - ESPANHA

Primeiro convém explicar que Majadahonda fica a uns 15 km do centro de Madrid, é um municipio com mais de 60 mil habitantes e uma boa alternativa para quem trabalha em Madrid mas não pode viver no centro, por preço e pelo tamanho das casas.

Mas é errado pensar que Majadahonda é um simples dormitório de Madrid, tem vida própria, tem bastante comércio e gente pelas ruas, todos os dias da semana.

Eu sempre tinha ouvido falar no seu mercado, é famoso e grande parte das pessoas que me recomendaram nem sequer vive em Majadahonda e ao fim de quase 8 ou 9 meses a levantar-me aos Sábados dizendo que ia ao mercado, hoje decidi cumprir com a minha palavra.

I should first explain that Majadahonda is about 15 km from central Madrid, is a municipality with more than 60 000 inhabitants and a good alternative for those who work in Madrid but can not live in the center, by price and by the size of houses.
But it is wrong to think that Majadahonda is a simple dorm of Madrid, has its own life, has enough trade and people in the streets every day of the week.
I had always Heard about this market, is famous and most people that recommend it don't even live in Majadahonda and after almost 8 or 9 months getting up on Saturday saying I was going to the market, today decided to comply with the my word.

Hoje conhecemos...a Cabalgata de Reyes Magos em Majadahonda.

É o nosso primeiro ano a viver em Espanha, ainda não temos bem esclarecidas algumas tradições que aqui se celebram. O nosso filho por exemplo já abriu todos os seus presentes que trouxe o Pai Natal, os espanhóis esperam pelos Reis. Até faz sentido sendo que o menino Jesus só recebeu presentes quando os Reis chegaram, segundo reza a lenda.

 

Today we have discovered... the Cabalgata Reyes Magos in Majadahonda.
It's our first year living in Spain, we still don't have quite established some traditions that are celebrated here. Our son for example has opened all his presents that Santa brought the Spaniards await Kings. It kinda makes sense being that the baby Jesus only received the presents when the Kings came, so the story tells.
