Quando vi neste website fotos da Taberna La Carmencita sabia que mais cedo ou mais tarde acabaria sentada numa das suas mesas a contemplar a sua castiça decoração e a degustar os seus pratos em homenagem ao antigamente.
Este Sábado lá conseguimos escapar para conhecer a Taberna que se inaugurou em 1854, que passou por outras mãos sem grande sucesso até que hoje abre as suas portas graças ao empreendorismo de Carlos Zamora, o mesmo do restaurante Deluz em Santander.
When I saw the photos on this website Taberna La Carmencita I knew that sooner or later we would end up sitting on it's tables to contemplate it's typical decor and taste their dishes that honor the past.
This Saturday we managed to escape to discover this Tavern that opened in 1854, it passed through other hands without much success until today it opens its doors thanks to the entrepreneurship of Carlos Zamora, the same from the Deluz restaurant in Santander.

Ao Deluz foram dados prémios de responsabilidade social pela sua cultura de utilização de productos ecológicos, respeitando os produtores mais tradicionais. A carta da La Carmencita segue a mesma linha porque até para fazer "huevos fritos" precisas de galinhas felizes.
Mas o que primeiro nos cativou foi a decoração, o respeito pelo modelo original que por milagre se foi conservando ao longo dos anos, o balcão pronto a servir vermut, as paredes com o azulejo original, os pratos e talheres antigos, tudo para recriar o ambiente mais castiço da história da Taberna que foi palco de tertúlias entre políticos e pensantes.
To Deluz were given awards for their social responsibility and culture of using ecological products, respecting the more tradicional producers. The menu from La Carmencita follows the same line because even to make "fried huevos" (fried eggs) you need happy chickens.
But what first captivated us was the decor,it's respect for the original model which by miracle was saving over the years, the counter ready to serve vermouth, walls with original tile, vintage plates and cutlery, all to recreate the typical environment of the tavern's history that was the scene of gatherings between politicians and thinkers.

Voltando á carta para entrada escolhemos os Entremeses calientes de La Carmencita no fundo um misto de fritos (ou "rebozados" como dizem por aqui) onde podes provar as "croquetas" (feitas com presunto e molho bechamel), os tigres (peixe frito), as rabas que são como calamares e os taquitos de queijo fritos.
Com a bebida servem um pequeno aperitivo, que no dia que fomos era um rolinho de rosbife com salada russa e mostarda. Até aqui tudo bem, não desiludia mas também não impressionava.
Sabendo das suas raízes cantábricas sugeri marido comer peixe, ele escolheu o Arroz Marinero que pode vir seco ou caldoso, ele escolheu o último. Eu pedi entrecote que estava bom mas não tanto como o Arroz Marinero que estava óptimo, é aquele prato pelo o qual voltaríamos a este restaurante e uma pena de que por tudo o que vi escrito na internet quase nunca é mencionado. Uma pena que sejam os "huevos" fritos o que mais fotos têm quando seguramente ovos estrelados deixam pouca margem para erro. Mas o sabor daquele arroz é algo que não esqueceremos tão cedo...
Returning to the many for starter we chose the Entremeses calientes de La Carmencita a mix of deep fried (or "rebozados" as they say here) where you can taste the "croquetas" (made with ham and bechamel sauce), Tigers (fried fish) the rabas that are like calamari and fried cheese taquitos.
With the drink they serve a small appetizer, that in the day we went there it was a roast beef roll with Russian salad and mustard. So far so good, it did not disappoint but didn't impress either.
Knowing it's Cantabrian roots I suggested to my husband eating fish, he chose Rice Marinero that can come dry or caldoso, he chose the latter. I ordered entrecote which was good but not as much as the Rice Marinero that was great, is that the dish which go back to this restaurant and that's a shame for all that I saw written on the internet is almost never mentioned. A pity that the "huevos" fried have more photos when fried eggs are a very safe choice. But the taste of that rice is something that we will not forget anytime soon ...

Ficámos satisfeitos e ainda houve tempo para trocar algumas palavras com o próprio Carlos Zamora que ia fazendo uma ronda pelas mesas a saber como estava a comida. O trato é outro dos pontos fortes do La Carmencita onde fomos muito bem tratados. Quanto a preços, os pratos rondam os 14-20€ de preço, das entradas ronda os 12-16€ e as sobremesas andam á volta dos 6€. Conclusão: não é barato porque uma refeição aqui pode custar entre 25€-40€ por pessoa (dependendo do vinho e das sobremesas), gostaríamos de voltar mas honestamente o preço dá que pensar. Talvez faríamos outras escolhas e pedir uma entrada, dividir o arroz por dois e comer sobremesa ainda assim seria para ir de vez em quando o que é uma pena porque é daqueles restaurantes que vale a pena.
We were satisfied and there was still time to exchange a few words with his owner Carlos Zamora who was doing a round to the tables to know how the food was. The service is another of the strengths of La Carmencita where we were very well treated. As for prices, the dishes are around € 14-20 price, the entrances are around 12-16 € and desserts will go around 6 €. Conclusion: it is not cheap because a meal here can cost between 25 € -40 € per person (depending on the wine and desserts), I would come back but honestly the price makes me think. Perhaps we could make other choices and we could ask for an entrance, split the rice and eat dessert for two it would still be to go from time to time which is a shame because it is one of those restaurants that is worth it.
