O exterior não denuncia a riqueza do seu pequeno interior, que conta com cinco naves separadas por arcos com um formato de ferradura e cuja ligação ao pilar se faz com um detalhe decorativo esculpido em pedra.

Construída no século XII vai sofrendo ao longo dos séculos algumas alterações, tanto de arquitectura como de função. Em 1405 passa a ser um templo cristão e no século XVI, o Cardeal Silíceo utiliza-o como refúgio penitencial para mulheres arrependidas (grande parte prostitutas).
O tamanho não lhe reduz o interesse e é impressionante a luminosidade que consegue com as pequenas entradas de luz para além de todas as paredes e pilares estarem pintados de branco. Em algumas zonas podemos ver alguns vestigios da sua veia cristã com uma decoração rica em dourados. E por todo o lado detalhes mudéjar misturação com a arquitectura religiosa.

A verdade é que só tinha ido a uma sinagoga uma vez, lembro-me que era grande e não era possível entender realmente a beleza da sua construção, por isso fazia tanta questão de ir a esta de Santa Maria, que apesar das alterações não deixa de fazer imaginar como utilizariam este templo na sua altura.
No seu interior está também uma exposição de pintura e desenho.
The truth is that I only had gone to a synagogue once, I remember it was big which didn't really help to understand the beauty of its construction, so it was so keen to go to this Santa Maria, despite the changes that do not ceases to imagine how this temple would use on your height.
