I can visit Salamanca and this square as many as I can, and I still can't help but be surprised by its size and beauty. It's the third time I've seen it and yet it seems that I'm there for the first time. I explore it unhurriedly and take pictures, many by the way.
For me it is the most beautiful squares in Spain (fact: I don't know them all) bigger than that of Madrid that is the capital and in it, in a New Year's Eve it becomes small to accommodate so many people that it leaves the old year to get in the new one the best way.

This is the heart of Salamanca's that's why it's always crowded. By coincidence I always come here in the winter which means that I never caught the famous sun terraces.
Designed in the eighteenth century by Alberto Churriguera, has a baroque architectural style and there are so many details that enrich it that it is best visit to visit it with no hurry. At one side there's a tribute to King Felipe V of Bourbon, according to a inscription it was during his reign that the construction of the plaza began. It is placed in the pavilion ward of Kings.

In the middle there's the building of the Municipality or "Ayuntamiento", imagine being "alcaide" (mayor) of Salamanca and come to work every day here, with an office overlooking the square ... such luck!
Another detail of the square is that above the arcades there are busts representing notable figures from Spain. Wikipedia has on its website the Iconographic Program that helps identify who they are, although some signs help you understand, others not so much. Among kings and adventurers, we found that one alludes to the birth of the republic and another which is a bust of Franco.

During the night, it's game of lights gives it an even more authentic and natural style. There are several bars and restaurants that become busy at this time and some we can take a peek from outside such as Meson Cervantes is one of the entrances to the square.
