GARRETT POPCORN SHOP - CHICAGO, EUA

A mais famosa casa de pipocas de Chicago é uma tentação, abriu a sua primeira  loja em 1949 dentro da zona do Loop na Madison Avenue e foi noutra ali perto junto aos teatros que provei as Caramel crisp. Acho sempre extraordinário como consegue sobreviver ao tempo um lugar que vende pipocas de fabrico artesanal e com receitas gourmet, dizem que tem um segredo que continua sem sair da familia Garrett.

 

The most famous Chicago popcorn house is a temptation, opened its first store in 1949 in the Loop area on Madison Avenue and it was in another nearby next to the theaters that tasted the crisp Caramel. I always find extraordinary how can a place like this survive time by selling handmade popcorn and gourmet recipes, they say that it has a secret that continues without leaving the Garrett family.

CHICAGO THEATRE DISTRICT - CHICAGO, EUA

São várias as imagens emblemáticas relacionadas com Chicago que tenho na minha cabeça uma delas é o reclamo luminoso do teatro mais antigo da cidade, símbolo da zona de entretenimento. Achei que as ruas do Teatre District não eram tão luminosas como a Broadway de Nova Iorque mas é oferta é igualmente interessante e claramente é algo que os que aqui vivem valorizam muito. As noites de musicais e peças de teatro animam a zona dentro do Loop, enchem as ruas de gente mesmo em días normalmente menos agitados.

 

There are several Chicago-related emblematic images I have in my head one is the bright claim of the oldest theater in town, symbol of the entertainment district. I thought the Teatre District streets were not as bright as the Broadway of New York but its offer is also interesting and clearly is something that those who live here highly value. The musical evenings and plays enliven the area inside the loop, people fill the streets even in days usually less agitated.

CORNER BAKERY - CHICAGO, EUA

É inevitável entrar no Corner Bakery e comparar com o Starbucks, o balcão e a maneira de expôr alguns produtos não ajudam a diferenciar mas notam-se as diferenças, eu pelo menos notei no preço e na qualidade do que comi. A cafetaria da esquina foi o meu "spot" regular para tomar o pequeno-almoço porque estava sempre uma por perto e foi onde comi o bagel com passas e canela que tanto gostei para além de um hot chocolat bastante bom.

 

It is inevitable to enter the Corner Bakery and compare with Starbucks, the counter and the way they display some products does not help to differentiate but you do notice the differences, I didd at least in price and quality of what I had to eat. This coffee shop on the corner was my regular spot to have breakfast because it was always close by and was where I had the bagel with raisins and cinnamon that I loved in addition to a pretty good hot chocolat.

PONTE DE DU SABLE - CHICAGO, EUA

Inaugurada em 1920 a Ponte Du Sable é na realidade a soma de duas pontes que se podem mover para passar barcos de maior porte e é uma das mais emblemáticas da cidade também porque conecta as duas partes da Michigan Avenue separada pelo rio Chicago. Passando a ponte e subindo em direcção ao Lago conseguimos ter uma das vistas mais icónicas da cidade com a Trump Tower, o Wrigley Building e o Tribune.

 

Inaugurated in 1920 the Du Sable bridge is actually the sum of two bridges that can move to pass larger boats and is one of the city's most emblematic also because it connects the two parts of Michigan Avenue separated by the Chicago River. Passing the bridge and climbing towards the lake I had one of the most iconic views of the city with the Trump Tower, Wrigley Building and the Tribune.

HYATT MAGNIFICENT MILE - CHICAGO, EUA

Não contava ter ficado neste hotel e era um dos que tinha preços acordados com a nossa empresa, como ficámos "presas" em Chicago o primeiro que nos marcaram foi o Hyatt perto da Magnificent Mile. Estaria fora do meu orçamento de outra maneira mas para o hotel que é considero que tem uma boa relação preço-qualidade considerando o nível em que se posiciona, os quartos são confortáveis e espaçosos, está muito bem localizado e o atendimento foi (quase) cinco estrelas.

 

I was not counting to stay at this hotel and it was one that had prices agreed with our company, as we were "stuck" in Chicago the first that they booked was the Hyatt near the Magnificent Mile. Would be out of my budget otherwise but I do consider that this hotel has a good value for money if you consider it's level, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, is very well located and the service was (almost) five star.

GLAZED AND INFUSED - CHICAGO, EUA

Sou daquelas pessoas que não acredita em passar uma semana a tomar o pequeno-almoço no hotel, acho que é bom para um dia mas os restantes, se estou numa grande cidade como Chicago prefiro conhecer as suas pastelarias ou onde todos vão tomar café pela manhã antes de ir trabalhar. Foi assim que fui ao Corner Bakery e que depois descobri o Glazed and Infused que ficava próximo do meu segundo hotel (o Acme Company). A especialidade da casa: donuts com as receitas mais originais e doces da cidade.

 

I am of those people who does not believe in spending a week having breakfast at the hotel, I think it is good for one day but the rest, if I'm in a big city like Chicago Iould rather know their pastries shops and go where everyone will have coffee in the morning before going to work. So that is how I went to the Corner Bakery to have breakfast and then discovered Glazed and Infused that was close to my second hotel (the Acme Company). The house specialty: donuts with the most original and sweet recipes in town.

CHICAGO RIVERWALK - CHICAGO, EUA

Será sem dúvida melhor na Primavera ou mesmo no Verão mas o Inverno dá um toque melancólico a este passeio junto ao rio Chicago. Há menos gente, vês algum corajoso a correr ou casalinho romântico que veio passar o fim de semana á cidade de resto o passeio tem árvores despidas, muita neve e em algumas zonas um gelo um tanto perigoso. Mas o melhor deste passeio é sem dúvida a própria cidade e arquitetura á sua volta.

 

Would undoubtedly be better in the spring or in the summer but winter gives a melancholic touch to this walk along the Chicago River. There are fewer people, you see some bold people running or a romantic happy couple who came to spend the weekend the rest you have the naked trees, lots of snow and ice in same areas that is somewhat dangerous. But the best of this walk is undoubtedly the city itself and the architecture around it.

THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY - CHICAGO, EUA

A fábrica do Cheesecake não é um original de Chicago mas sim de Detroit e apesar de hoje ser uma grande cadeia começou com Evelyn Overton que segundo dizem fazia uns cheesecakes deliciosos em casa e acabou por abrir uma pequena loja, graças a ela pude provar um dos melhores que alguma vez comi e não sendo nenhuma especialista no assunto saí bastante contente. Fui ao que fica no John Hancock Center e quando entras a decoração faz-te sentir no País das Maravilhas.

 

The Cheesecake Factory is not an original Chicago but Detroit and although today it is a large chain it began with Evelyn Overton who they say made delicious cheesecakes at home and eventually opened a small shop, thanks to her I could taste oneof the best I've ever eaten and being no expert on the subject I left very happy. I went to the one that is on the John Hancock Center and when you enter the decor makes you feel in Wonderland.

BEATRIX - CHICAGO, EUA

A história da nossa ida ao Beatrix começa pelo o seu nome, o mesmo de uma colega que estava connosco em Chicago mas além disso foi recomendado por uma amiga sua que dizia que era óptimo e não defraudou as expectativas, comemos muito bem aqui. Dizem que continua a ser um dos sitios da moda da cidade com uma sala acolhedora com um ambiente descontraído e bastante composta para uma terça-feira á noite.

 

The story of our trip to the Beatrix starts with your name, the same as a colleague who was with us in Chicago but also was recommended by a friend of hers who said it was great and did not defraud the expectations, we ate very well here. They say it is still one of the city's trendy places with a cozy living room with a relaxed environment and quite busy for a Tuesday evening at.

JOHN HANCOCK CENTER 360º - CHICAGO, EUA

Antes de ir á Willis Tower fui ao John Hancock center e pelas fotos se nota que não foi o melhor momento porque o céu estava nublado, não conseguíamos ver a cidade com a luz e cor que se pode ver por exemplo na Primavera. Ainda assim a vista 360º é impressionante e é também uma maneira de ver os outros arranha-céus da cidade que se podem comparar com a sua altura como o que a Willis tower que já mencionei mas também vemos a Trump Tower. Para isto temos que chegar ao piso 94 deste edificio com trezentos e quarenta metros de altura.

 

Before going to the Willis Tower I went to the John Hancock Center and in the pictures you may notice that it was not the best time because the sky was cloudy, we could not see the city with light and color that can be seen for example in the spring. Still the 360º view is impressive and is also a way to see the city's other skyscrapers that can be compared to it's height as the Willis tower that I already mentioned but we also see the Trump Tower. For this we have to get to floor 94 of this building with three hundred and forty meters high.

LOU MALNATI'S PIZZERIA - CHICAGO, EUA

Ficou em aberto (pelo menos para mim) a discussão da melhor Deep Dish Pizza de Chicago, há quem diga que a original será sempre a melhor e essa só comemos na Pizzeria Uno que eu tinha na esquina da rua do meu hotel ainda assim decidi aceitar a sugestão de uma colega de trabalho americana que disse: "As melhores são as do Lou Malnati". Têm vários restaurantes mas o que visitei ficava no South Loop.

 

Remained open (at least for me) the discussion of the best Deep Dish Pizza Chicago, some say that the original is always the best and that we can only eat at Pizzeria Uno that was close to my hotel's street corner yet decided to accept the suggestion of an American co-worker who said, "the best are the ones from Lou Malnati". They have several restaurants but the one I visited was in the South Loop.

MAGNIFICENT MILE - CHICAGO, EUA

Foram várias as vezes que passei pela Michigan Avenue mais conhecida como a Magnificient Mile, de certa forma era o meu ponto de referência para me guiar pela cidade. A avenida é grande mas o Magnificient Mile refere-se apenas á parte a norte do rio de Chicago e começa depois da Ponte Du Sable chegando até á Torre de John Hancock. São vários os edificios emblemáticos que podemos ver aqui mas o dos seus maiores atrativos são as lojas que mesmo com o frio convidam a passear na rua.

There were several the times I passed by the Michigan Avenue better known as the Magnificent Mile, in a way it was my reference point to guide me through the city. The avenue is quite big but the Magnificient Mile refers only to north part of the Chicago River and begins after the Du Sable Bridge going as far as the John Hancock Tower. There are several emblematic buildings that we can see here but its biggest attractions are the shops that even with the cold invite to walk in the Street.

MILLENNIUM PARK - CHICAGO, EUA

É talvez das imagens mais icónicas de Chicago: o Cloud Gate ou como é conhecido localmente - the Bean. Tinha por isso muita curiosidade e não sei porquê esperava algo maior mas ainda assim é divertido ver esta gigantesca escultura que já se tornou um "landmark" da cidade além de colocar no mapa turístico o Millennium Park localizado na zona norte do Grant Park.

O nome já diz muito, este parque está dedicado ao novo milénio e nele podemos ver alguns exemplos da arte moderna como o já mencionado Cloud Gate mas também o Jay Pritzker Pavillion ou a Crown Fountain.

 

It is perhaps one of the most iconic images of Chicago: the Cloud Gate or as it is known locally - the Bean. Had so much curiosity and do not know why expect something bigger but it's still fun to see this giant sculpture that has already become a landmark of the city as well as put on the tourist map the Millennium Park located in the north of Grant Park.
The name says a lot, this park is dedicated to the new millennium and in it we can see some examples of modern art as the aforementioned Cloud Gate but also the Jay Pritzker Pavillion or the Crown Fountain.

PARQUE DE NAVY PIER - CHICAGO, EUA

Tinha muito curiosidade de conhecer o Navy Pier, nunca tinha estado em nenhum do género e quando estive em Nova Iorque foi das coisas que tinha planeado mas não houve tempo.  O Inverno não é a melhor altura para visitá-lo mas ainda assim havia bastante gente, estavam a remodelar algumas partes e achei que seria uma zona mais vocacionada para ar livre mas é na realidade um grande centro de ócio com algumas partes que não estão fechadas, uma delas é a sua famosa Ferris Wheel.

 

Was very curious about the Navy Pier, had never been to one of that kind and when I was in New York it was one of the things we had planned but there was no time do it. Winter is not the best time to visit it but still it had a lot of people, they were repairing a part of it and I thought it would be an area more focused in the outdoors but is actually a big center of entertainment with some parts that are not closed , one of them is its famous Ferris Wheel.

JOE'S SEAFOOD, PRIME STEAK & STONE CRAB - CHICAGO, EUA

Quando entrei no Joe's já sabia o que queria comer: uma sandes de caranguejo do Alaska. A minha rápida escolha e decisão chegou a surpreender a empregada que me atendeu mas tinha pouco tempo para comer e queria muito comer algo assim depois de em Nova Iorque ter provado os Lobster rolls. O Joe's estava muito perto do meu hotel e pareceu-me uma boa opção, o original está em Miami e é famoso pelo seu Stone crab e a proposta de uma lugar onde podes comer um bom bife e provar o marisco norte-americano parece-me excelente.

 

When I walked into Joe's I already knew what I wanted to eat: a crab sandwich Alaska. My quick choice and decision come has a surprise to the waitress that had my table but I had little time to eat and wanted to eat something like this specially after in New York I tasted the Lobster rolls. Joe's was very close to my hotel and it seemed like a good option, the original is in Miami and is famous for its Stone crab and the proposal of a place where you can eat a good steak and taste the US seafood seems to me excellent.

SKYDECK WILLIS TOWER - CHICAGO, EUA

Partilha com o John Hancock Center as melhores vistas da cidade como a concorrência que há em Nova Iorque entre o Empire State Building e o Top of the Rock, mas a Willis tower - antiga Sears Tower - tem algo de especial, não sei se foi a hora do dia a que a visitei, se a sua historia mas foi um momento extraordinário e um dos pontos altos da minha passagem pela cidade. Ajudou-me a ver desde cima o que já sabíamos, Chicago é especial. Uma cidade das que vale mesmo a pena visitar, pelo rio, pelo lago, pelos demais arranha-céus, pelos seus parques, pela sua comida, etc..

Shares with the John Hancock Center the best views of the city a competition like the one there is in New York with the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock, but the Willis tower - old Sears Tower - has something special, I do not know if it was the time of day I visited, if it's history but it was an extraordinary time and one of the highlights of my passing through this city. It helped me to see from above what we already knew, Chicago is special. A city of those that are worth visiting, because of its river, the lake, the other skyscrapers, its parks, for its food, etc ..

ACME COMPANY HOTEL - CHICAGO, EUA

Depois de ter estado no Hyatt Magnificent Mile tenho que confessar que precisei de ajustar-me ao ACME, um hotel muito mais descontraído onde te sentes como um rock star com uma decoração alternativa e capas de discos de bandas rock clássicas nos elevadores. Em vez de fatos os recepcionistas usam sweatshirts da ACME. Tem dois pontos a favor, a localização e preço. Fica a poucos metros da Magnificient mile, do edificio da Wrigley e uns dez minutos (a pé) da zona do Loop, para não falar da grande quantidade de restaurantes á sua volta.

 

After being at the Hyatt Magnificent Mile I have to confess that I had to adjust myself to the ACME, a hotel much more relaxed where you feel like a rock star with an alternative decoration and bands album covers rock in classical lifts. Instead of suits recepcionists use ACME sweatshirts. Has two strengths, the location and price. It is a few meters from the Magnificent Mile, the Wrigley building and ten minutes (walk) from the Loop area, not to mention the plethora of restaurants around you.

 

THE ART INSTITUTE - CHICAGO, EUA

 

Talvez o museu mais importante da cidade e é sem dúvida um dos obrigatórios a visitar se estás em Chicago. Guardei-o para o último dia e não foi a melhor a ideia porque para realmente explorar tudo o que tem para oferecer precisas no minimo reservar uma manhã (4 horas) e para realmente ver todas as galerias com merecida atenção seria necessário um dia completo.
A sua extensa coleção esta dividida em dois edificios e três andares, os pisos um e dois conservam a maior parte com exposições que vão desde a Arte Islâmica, Chinesa, Indiana, Africana passando pela gloriosa época dos gregos e romanos. Na era mais moderna podemos ver alguns dos pintores mais famosos da Europa como Picasso mas a parte que mais me interessava era a arte Americana.

Perhaps the most important museum of the city and is arguably one of the mandatory to visit if you are in Chicago. I saved it for the last day and it was not the best idea because to really explore all it has to offer very well you need at least a morning (4 hours) and to actually see all galleries with attention it deserves, a full day would be necessary.
Its extensive collection is divided into two buildings and three floors, the floors one and two retain most with exhibits ranging from the Islamic Art, Chinese, Indian, African past the glorious time of the Greeks and Romans. In more modern times we can see some of the most famous painters of Europe as Picasso but the part that interested me most was the American art.

LA MANO DE PABLO - MADRID, ESPANHA

Descobri La Mano de Pablo por acaso, no fim de semana antes de uma viagem de trabalho quis ir passear com a familia ao Parque Juan Carlos I (ver post aqui) e enquanto procurava um lugar para almoçar lembrei-me de uma casa de hamburguers que está na zona de Las Tablas que também tenho ao pé do lugar onde trabalho. Para nossa surpresa estava fechado, era Domingo e não entendi bem porquê mas foi o que nos fez chegar até este restaurante uruguaio. Foi uma excelente descoberta porque gostámos do que comemos e do serviço.

I discovered La Mano de Pablo by chance, on the weekend before a business trip I wanted to go sightseeing with family to Juan Carlos I Park (see post here) and while looking for somewhere to have lunch I remembered a hamburger house that is in the Las Tablas area that also exists near the place where I work. To our surprise it was closed, it was Sunday and did not understand why but that's what made us reach this Uruguayan restaurant. It was a great discovery because we liked what we eat and the service.

WHITBY - MADRID, ESPANHA

Há algum tempo fomos jantar ao Whitby com uns amigos, já tinha passado por este bar-restaurante algumas vezes e sempre me despertou curiosidade. É um excelente lugar para tomar um copo no after work mas queríamos experimentar a sua carta a ver que tal. Posso dizer que foi uma boa experiência ainda que uma dos principais problemas deste lugar é o ruído que vem do bar mesmo quando estás sentado no piso superior.

 

Some time ago we had dinner at Whitby with some friends, had passed by this bar-restaurant a few times and always woke me curious. It's a great place to have a drink after work on but we wanted to try his letter to see that such. I can say it was a good experience even if one of the main problems of this place is the noise coming from the bar even when you are sitting on the top floor.

CORRERIA KALEA - VITORIA, ESPANHA

A caminho do restaurante e saindo da zona da Catedral percorremos este rua, um das três que pela sua forma ajudam a desenhar a famosa amêndoa. Receberam nomes de oficios porque na época medieval juntavam-se todos nas mesmas ruas, como a dos Sapateiros ou dos Ferreiros, a da Correria refere-se aos que fabricavam talheres que nos dias de hoje já não existem mas deixaram a herança do comércio tradicional.

 

On our way to the restaurant and out of the Cathedral área we walk be this street, one of three that help shape the city centre into the famous almond. It received the names of ancient professiones because in medieval times they all gathered up in the same streets, such as the Cobblers or Blacksmith, the Correria refers to the ones that manufactured cutlery that these days no longer exist but have left the legacy of traditional trade.

PASSEIO FREI FRANCISCO DE VITORIA - VITORIA, ESPANHA

Uma das dicas do nosso hotel foi estacionar á volta do Parque do Prado para depois caminhar um pouco pelo Passeio de Fray Francisco de Vitoria. Uma excelente recomendação porque adorámos o nosso passeio por aqui, uma zona pedonal com um espantoso arvoredo que deve ser ainda mais bonito no Outono ou na Primavera. Além disso é uma das zonas mais interessantes com palácios do principio do século XX como por exemplo o do Museu das Belas Artes.

 

One of the tips from our hotel was to park our car around the Prado gardens and then walk a little by Fray Francisco de Vitoria Drive. An excellent recommendation because we loved our stroll through here, a pedestrian zone with an amazing grove that should be even more beautiful in autumn or spring. Also is one of the most interesting areas with palaces from the beginning of the twentieth century such as the Museum of Fine Arts.
