Caminhar pelas ruas de Arévalo foi uma verdadeira surpresa, sempre fui a trabalho mas com o objectivo de "conquistar" o seu Castelo com os miúdos decidimos explorar o resto da cidade. A Plaza de la Villa foi o nosso lugar preferido, um excelente exemplo da arquitectura popular espanhola com as casas de construção medieval com arcadas cujos pilares de pedra e madeira ainda hoje as mantêm de pé.

 

Walking the streets of Arévalo was a real surprise, I always went for work but now with the aim to "conquer" the castle with the kids we have decided to explore the rest of the city. The Plaza de la Villa was our favorite place, an excellent example of Spanish popular architecture medieval houses with arches whose pillars of stone and wood still keep them standing.

do: IGREJA SAN JUAN BAUTISTA - ARÉVALO, ESPANHA

Das quatro igrejas que visitámos em Arévalo, esta foi a minha preferida e não foi difícil, era das que mais tinha para ver no seu interior, entre ornamentados retablos, a zona de baptismo decoradas com pinturas que me lembram as do Renascimento italiano, entre outras coisas que fazem dela a mais acolhedora. Foi construída entre os séculos XII-XIII e é também conhecida como San Juan de los Reyes.

 

Out of the four churches we visited in Arévalo, this was my favorite and it was not hard, it was that one that had the most to see inside, between ornate altarpieces, the baptism are decorated with paintings that remind me of those of the Italian Renaissance, among other things that make it more welcoming. It was built between the XII-XIII centuries and is also known as San Juan de los Reyes.

Mais um Castelo "conquistado", desta vez foi o de Arévalo a uma hora de Madrid. Esta cidade na comunidade de Castilla y León assumiu grande relevância na juventude de Isabel, a futura rainha de Castela e a sua mãe (que tinha o mesmo nome) recebeu a vila por parte do seu marido o Rei D. Juan II. Talvez por isso e ainda que sem ter umas dimensões espectaculares, a visita ao Castelo de Arévalo é essencial para conhecer um pouco mais sobre a história de Espanha e um plano favorito para familias que vivem na zona de Madrid.

 

Another Castle "won" this time it was the one in Arévalo an hour from Madrid. This town in the Castilla y León community assumed great importance in the youth of Isabel, the future Queen of Castile and her mother (who had the same name) received the village of her husband King Juan II. Because of that, and even without having a spectacular dimensions, the castle of Arévalo is essential to know a little more about the history of Spain and a favorite plan for families living in the Madrid área.

do: MUSEU DO FERROCARRIL - MADRID, ESPANHA

A primeira vez que visitei o Museu do Ferrocarril foi para conhecer o Mercado dos Motores e a segunda foi durante um evento do TrenBrick 2014 que decorreu este mês de Outubro. Este último por ser mais pequeno e com menos gente para ver permitiu-nos conhecer melhor a essência do Museu e a história dos comboios em Espanha. Está instalado na antiga Estação de Comboios de Delicias que abriu no final do século XIX e deixou de funcionar em 1971 sendo depois transformada no museu que vemos hoje.

 

The first time I visited the Museo del Ferrocarril was to go to the Mercado dos Motores and the second was during an event of the TrenBrick 2014 held this October. The latter because it was  smaller and less crowded enabled us to know more about the essence of the museum and the history of trains in Spain. Is housed in the former Delicias Train Station which opened in the late nineteenth century and ceased it's activity in 1971 after being transformed into the museum we see today.

eat: LA MARUCA - MADRID, ESPANHA

Finalmente ficámos a saber porque é tão difícil conseguir mesa no La Maruca, uma carta simples com pratos que são grandes acertos e um excelente ambiente com uma decoração acolhedora fazem deste restaurante o êxito. Fomos numa segunda-feira e estava cheio o que confirma o fenómeno.

Está dividido em três espaços, logo há entrada está uma pequena (e igualmente concorrida) esplanada, depois ao descer uns degraus chegámos á sala principal mas ainda há outra no piso de baixo.

 

Finally we learned why it is so hard to get table at La Maruca, a simple menú with dishes that are big hits and a great atmosphere with a warm decor make this restaurant a success. We went on a Monday and it was full which confirms the phenomenon.
Is divided into three spaces, there is a small (and equally crowded) terrace at the entrance, then we descended a few steps into the main room but there is another on the lower floor.

Vi há pouco tempo o filme "Chef" de John Favreu sobre um cozinheiro de um bom restaurante que recebe uma má crítica e perde o trabalho, volta á origem da sua paixão pela cozinha através da simplicidade da comida de rua viajando com a sua renovada roulote vendendo deliciosas sandes Cubano. Gostei do filme, da sua relação com o filho e reencontro com a verdadeira essência da comida, tinha tanta vontade de experimentar algo assim que quando vi na web todo o burburinho á volta do Madreat fomos a correr.

 

I recently saw the movie "Chef" from John Favreu about a cook of a good restaurant that gets a bad review and loses the job, goes back to the source of his passion for cooking through the simplicity of street food traveling with his renewed caravan selling delicious Cuban sandwiches. I liked the film, his relationship with his son and his reunion with the true essence of food, I was so eager to try something like that that when I saw on the web the buzz around Madreat I went running.

do: PARQUE CERRO DEL TÍO PÍO - MADRID, ESPANHA

Passando a "fronteira" da M30 chegámos a Puente de Vallecas onde está o parque do Cerro del Tío Pío que é sem dúvida o que tem as melhores vistas sobre a cidade de Madrid. Foi uma excelente final de tarde com os mais pequenos que aproveitaram para brincar na zona infantil e depois subimos a um dos cerros para ver o pôr do sol. Nesse momento as colinas ficam mais concorridas e o mais comum é levar um piquenique para aproveitá-lo da melhor maneira.

 

Passing the "frontier" of the M30 we arrived at the Puente de Vallecas where the park Cerro del Tío Pío is, it is undoubtedly the one that has the best views over the city of Madrid. It was a great end of the day with the little ones who played in the kid's zone and then we went up to one of the hills to watch the sunset. At that time the hills are the busiest and the most common is to take a picnic to enjoy it the best way.

eat: MESÓN LAS CUADRAS DE ROCINANTE - ALCALÁ DE HENARES, ESPANHA

Em Alcalá de Henares qualquer viajante se sentirá bem recebido principalmente quando falamos de comida porque das duas experiências que tive na cidade comi sempre bem. Desta vez experimentámos o Mesón Las Cuadras de Rocinante - o cavalo de Dom Quixote. Foi durante o Mercado Cervantino e havia uma multidão na rua, mas fomos cedo e optámos por ficar dentro em vez da sua esplanada que já estava cheia.

 

In Alcalá de Henares any traveler will feel welcome especially when it comes to food because in the two experiences I've had in town we always ate well. This time we tried the Meson Las Cuadras Rocinante - the horse of Don Quixote. It was during the Cervantino Market and there was a crowd in the street, but we were there early and decided to stay inside instead of it's terrace which was already full.

Todos os anos em Outubro decorre em Alcalá de Henares, a Semana Cervantina em honra a Miguel Cervantes que dizem ter nascido nesta cidade. A sua maior obra Don Quixote de La Mancha é o tema de este evento que faz circular mais de cem mil pessoas pelas ruas do centro histórico de Alcalá. Nós fomos ao último fim de semana e foi uma agradável surpresa, já tinha estado em mercados medievais mas este tem uma outra dimensão.

 

Every year in October held in Alcalá de Henares, Cervantina Week (Semana Cervantina) in honor of Miguel Cervantes that is said to have been born in this city. His greatest work Don Quixote of La Mancha is the theme of this event that over a hundred thousand people circulate through the streets of the historic center of Alcalá. We went there last weekend and it was a pleasant surprise, I had been in medieval markets but this has another dimension.

eat: SUSHI SHOP - MADRID, ESPANHA

Há algum tempo que o Sushi Shop da Serrano me despertava curiosidade, mais ainda depois de ver uma em Paris e quando uma reunião de trabalho me levou ao Bairro de Salamanca não hesitei em experimentar. São várias a cidades europeias que contam com este franchising desde Nova Iorque, Londres, Bruxelas, Barcelona, Milão entre outras. O espaço na Serrano tem a opção de Take-away e um restaurante.

For some time the Sushi Shop of Serrano was generating some curiosity even more after seeing one in Paris and when a meeting took me to the neighborhood of Salamanca I did not hesitate to try it. There are various European cities that rely on this franchise from New York, London, Brussels, Barcelona, Milan and others. The space in Serrano has the option to take-away and restaurant.

JARDINES DEL DESCUBRIMENTO - MADRID, ESPANHA

Sempre que pensó nos Jardines del Descubrimento penso em eventos sejam desportivos, culturais ou sociais porque quase sempre quando passamos por aqui há algo acontecer. A última vez foi o Glamour Street Fashion show onde conseguimos ver o ensaio com a modelo Martina Klein como apresentador.

Foi inaugurado na década de 70 para celebrar o Descobrimento da América por Cristovão Colombo e por isso os jardins estão dentro da Plaza Colón (Colombo).

 

Whenever I think of the Jardines del Descubrimento think of sports, cultural or social events because almost always when we go through there is something happening. The last time was the Glamour Street Fashion show where we can see the rehearsal with model Martina Klein as a presenter.
It was opened in the 70s to celebrate the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and that's why the gardens are within the Plaza Colón (Columbus).

eat: PLATEA - MADRID, ESPANHA

Abriu nos antigos cinemas de Carlos III esta original proposta de "ócio gastronómico" (segundo asume o seu site oficial), já tinha lido algo sobre o Platea em vários blogs de Madrid mas foi preciso ver ao vivo para entender melhor o seu conceito. Primeiro acho o ambiente original, ainda que o (encerrado) Teatriz tivesse a mesma premissa aproveitar a sala de um teatro ou cinema como pano de fundo para uma experiência gastronómica. A diferença está que o Plateia não oferece apenas uma experiência mas várias.

 

Opened in the old cinemas of Carlos III this original proposal "gastronomic idleness" (according to their official website), had read something about Platea on various blogs Madrid but had to see it live to better understand the concept. First I think the environment is original, even if the (closed) Teatriz had the same premise of taking advantage of the room of a theater or cinema as a backdrop for a dining experience. The difference is that the Plateia offers not only an experience but several.

O edificio mais importante de esta praça é o antigo de Las Cortes que hoje é conhecido como Congresso dos Deputados (Congreso de los Diputados) e sede do parlamento.
Foi construído onde existiu um antigo convento que no século XIX foi destruído num incêndio. O actual edificio foi projectado por Narciso Pascual y Colomer em 1843 e para além da sua impressionante fachada, a principal atracção são os seus leões de bronze criados em 1866 utilizando material de canhões.

 

The most important building of this square is the old Las Cortes that is now known as the Congress of Deputies (Congreso de los Diputados) and seat of parliament.
It was built in the place where an old convent used to stand and in the nineteenth century it was destroyed in a fire. The current building was designed by Narciso Pascual y Colomer in 1843 and in addition to its impressive façade, the main attraction is the bronze lions created in 1866 using cannon material.

eat: LAMUCCA DE PRADO - MADRID, ESPANHA

O primeiro Lamucca que conheci foi o da Calle Pez, foi em 2010 e tinha acabado de chegar a Madrid. Era na altura um dos sitios da moda e quatro anos mais tarde, depois de visitar o que está na Calle Prado continua a ser bastante concorrido. Tem várias coisas a seu favor, a primeira é o seu ambiente descontraído, depois a sua comida e a variedade que encontramos na carta. Outro ponto é que é óptimo para levar crianças e foi uma excelente solução quando procurámos um restaurante para comer com os nossos filhos.

 

The first I met was the Lamucca Calle Pez was in 2010 and had just arrived in Madrid. It was then one of the fashion sites and four years later, after visiting what is in Calle Prado continues to be very busy. Has several things going for it, the first is its relaxed atmosphere, then the food and the variety we find in the menu. Another point is that it is great for taking children and was an excellent solution when we tried a restaurant to eat with our children.

do: MUSEU ARQUEOLÓGICO NACIONAL - MADRID, ESPANHA

Esteve fechado desde 2008 a 2013 mas reabriu com três pisos (mais um intermédio) repletos de descobertas arqueológicas que vão desde a origem do Homem até ao mundo Medieval e ás colecções do século XIX. Foi durante o reinado de Isabel II que se construiu o Museu dizem que em linha com outros que alguns monarcas promoviam nos seus países e creio que valeu a pena esperar seis anos porque gostei muito de visitar o MAN, gostei do resultado final e fiquei impressionada com a quantidade de colecções que tinha.

It was closed from 2008 to 2013 but reopened with three floors (plus an intermediate) full of archaeological finds ranging from the origin of man to the Medieval world and collections of the nineteenth century. It was during the reign of Isabel II that the museum was built they say it was in line with other monarchs that promoted in their countries and I think it was worth waiting six years because I really enjoyed visiting the MAN, I liked the end result and I was impressed with the amount of collections that had.

Uma das praças mais bonitas da cidade é o local onde podemos encontrar o elegante Hotel de Bourgtherould que ocupa um palácio renascentista com o mesmo nome e alguns dos seus restaurantes mais modernos com esplanadas que com o bom tempo que fazia, vimos bastante animadas.

O seu nome é completo é La Pucelle (Dama) de Orleães, uma referência ao nome pelo qual Joana D'Arc é conhecida e mais uma homenagem a esta heroína francesa.

 

One of the most beautiful squares in the city is the place where you can find the elegant Hotel de Bourgtherould which occupies a Renaissance palace with the same name and some of its most modern restaurants with terraces that with the good weather of that day, we saw them quite animated.
Its complete name is La Pucelle (Lady) of Orleans, a reference to the name by which Joan of Arc is known and another tribute to this French heroine.

do: RUE SAINT-ROMAIN - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Depois da Rue du Gros Horloge, a Rua Saint-Romain é outra das ruas pedestre de Rouen com mais encanto. Dedicada ao Santo Romanus, um arcebispo de Rouen no século VII fica na zona norte da Catedral cujo muro lhe coloca os limites. Do outro lado estão os seus históricos edificios de construção do século XV ao XVIII cuja linha arquitectónica segue a que vemos no centro da cidade.

 

After the Rue du Gros Horloge, the Saint-Romain is another of pedestrian streets of Rouen with more charm. Dedicated to St. Romanus, an archbishop of Rouen in the seventh century it's in the north of the Cathedral whose Wall gives it's limits. On the other side its historic buildings built in the fifteenth to the eighteenth century whose architectural line follows what we see in the city center.

do: HOTEL DE BOURGTHEROULDE - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Hoje é um hotel de luxo mas o Bourgtheroulde chegou a ser um banco e originalmente uma Palácio para a familia Le Roux. É uma fascinante obra do Renascimento que foi sendo construída ao longo do tempo e que sofreu também durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Apenas visitámos o pátio que será o que tem acesso público o interior está reservado a hóspedes do hotel.

Today it's a luxury hotel but the Bourgtheroulde was actually a bank and originally a palace for the family Le Roux. It's a fascinating Renaissance work that was built over time and also suffered during the Second World War. We just visited the courtyard which has access to the public but the interior is reserved for hotel guests.

eat: AUZOU - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Adoro macarons, admito. Sou especialista em comer este maravilhoso doce mas estou longe de ser especialista em avaliá-los, ainda assim do pouco que sei posso dizer que os da Grand-Mére Auzou foram dos melhores que já comi e provei os da Ladurée. É impossível passar pela Rue du Gros Horloge e não parar junto ao carrinho da loja onde está a sua colorida pirâmide de macarons.

 

I love macarons, I admit it. I'm specialized in eating this wonderful sweet but I'm far from being an expert to evaluate them, yet from the little I know I can say that the Grand-Mère Auzou were the best I've ever eaten and I tasted the ones from Ladurée. It is impossible to pass through the Rue du Gros Horloge and not stop along the store's cart where it's colorful pyramid of macarons is.

Começámos a entrar no espírito de Rouen quando entrámos na Rue du Gros Horloge, até então só tínhamos visto a Catedral e a sua Praça mas foi quando chegamos até aqui que realmente entendemos porque é que vale a pena visitar esta cidade que apesar dos bombardeios da Segunda Guerra Mundial consegue manter uma parte da sua arquitetura medieval. O nome vem do Gros Horloge que está a meio de esta rua que liga a Catedral até á Place du Vieux Marché.

 

We started to get into the spirit of Rouen when we entered the Rue du Gros Horloge, until then we had only seen the Cathedral and its square but it was when we got here we really understand why it is worth visiting this city that despite the bombings of World War it manages to keep a portion of its medieval architecture. The name comes from the Gros Horloge which is in the middle of this street that connects the Cathedral until the Place du Vieux Marché.

do: CATEDRAL NOTRE-DAME - ROUEN, FRANÇA

O primeiro que visitámos em Rouen foi a sua catedral, chegámos antes de fechar e não conseguimos ver tudo mas ainda assim foi uma excelente experiência. A sua construção iniciou no século XII no local de uma basílica do século IV e outra igreja de estilo románico de XI e conserva o seu imponente estilo gótico mesmo depois de ter vivido reformas após varias guerras, furacões, raios, etc..

 

The first thing we visited in Rouen was its cathedral, we arrived before closing and we could not see everything but it was still a great experience. Its construction began in the twelfth century on the site of a basilica of the fourth century and another church of Romanesque style from the XI century and still retains its imposing Gothic style even after having lived through reforms after several wars, hurricanes, lightning, etc..

eat: DAME CAKES - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Queria tanto ir ao Dame Cakes que demos algumas voltas por Rouen para fazer tempo até abrir (não abre muito cedo na manhã) e ainda bem que não desistimos. É um daqueles sitios que te faz viajar no tempo, pensar que estás no inicio do século XX onde o tempo parecia andar mais devagar e alguns privilegiados podiam sentar-se num Salão de Chá como o Dame Cakes, tomar uma bebida quente e provar um dos seus deliciosos bolos. Só a montra já te convida a entrar.

 

I wanted to go to Dame Cakes so much that we went for a few laps around Rouen to make time so it would open (it does not open very early in the morning) and I'm glad we did not give up. It's one of those places that makes you travel back in time, thinking you're in the early twentieth century where time seems to move slowly and a privileged few can sit in a Tea Room like the Dame Cakes, have a hot drink and sample one of their delicious cakes. Just the window already invites you to go in.

sleep: IBIS CHAMP DE MARS - ROUEN, FRANÇA

O hotel onde ficámos foi o Ibis Champ de Mars, fica relativamente perto do centro de Rouen ainda que ao ver o mapa tivéssemos ficado com a sensação de que iria ser mais longe. Dormimos apenas uma noite, foi uma segunda-feira e o preço foi de 59€ pelo quarto, foi do mais barato que conseguimos encontrar na cidade (e com condições razoáveis).

 

The hotel where we stayed was the Hotel Champ de Mars it is relatively close to the center of Rouen yet when we saw it on the map it left us with the feeling that it would be further away. We slept only one night, it was a Monday and the price was 59 € for the room, it was the cheapest we could find in the city (with reasonable conditions).

do: IGREJA DE STA. JOANA - ROUEN, FRANÇA

Tenho que confessar que sou uma fã da história da Joana D'Arc, que vi alguns filmes e séries sobre a sua vida e visitei outras cidades francesas (como Orleães) onde estive mais perto de saber mais sobre ela. A igreja que lhe dedicou a cidade de Rouen foi construída junto ao local onde foi executada mas o edificio tem uma arquitetura interessante que a mim me custou ligar á sua vida talvez por sentir que por exemplo a Catedral de Sainte-Croix em Orleães tivesse mais que ver com a sua época.

 

I have to confess that I am a fan of the story of Joan of Arc, I saw movies and series about her life and visited other French cities (like Orleans) which was closer to know more about her. The church that the city of Rouen dedicated  was built near the place where she was executed but the building has an interesting architecture that was hard for me to connect to her life maybe because I felt that example the Cathedral of Sainte-Croix in Orleans had more to do with her era.
